Poetry

Poetry may be written independently as discrete poems, or may occur in conjunction with other arts, as in dramatic poetry, hymns or prose poetry.

The Scent of Wildfire: Poems of Passion and Perception
by Danny Winter
Danny Winter is a profound observer of the human condition, and in this captivating collection, he does what he does best: crafting poems with fierce passion and vibrant flair. What can be said about Danny? He possesses a ferocious spirit and boundless energy, a keen perception of the world, and a soul that soars with emotion. He is fiercely loyal, a romantic, a quixotic dreamer, and ever starry-eyed – a vibrant legacy of his Gypsy heritage. These gifts, of course, have endowed Gypsies with essential survival instincts, honed by a truly dark sense of humor. Yet, Danny also brings smiles to everyone he meets, a gift I believe comes from a higher source. There's no denying, however, that at times he can be restless, carrying the capacity for profoundly darker moods, melancholic depths, and occasional brushes with madness. Writers, poets, artists, musicians, and circus clowns often possess vibrant and sometimes tumultuous spirits, and it's true they can find themselves in trouble. Their moods become the very vessels of their journeys, and Danny is no different. He suffers from what Lord Byron would term a 'fine madness.' He unleashes poems in a burst of sparkling energy, pouring everything into the words. They flow onto the page as if guided by a higher power—an inexplicable process, but it is how it happens. Having known Danny for over 40 years, since we shared a room in a seaside town on England's south coast, my opinion is this: he’s probably a touch of a mad genius. He loves the world and everyone in it, and if just one person enjoys this book, Danny will sleep with a smile on his face tonight. He is a stargazer who divines fortunes through his verse. As we publish this book amidst a global pandemic – yet another crisis we will overcome – Danny addresses this, and many other challenges, with poems that are at times profoundly insightful, and surprisingly humorous. Within these pages, you'll discover poems on a vast spectrum of human experience: from England's landscapes to the passion of football, the complexities of religion to the realities of Alzheimer's, alcoholism, drug abuse, and homelessness. He explores aging, the unconditional love of pets, military life, the grit of boxers, the simple power of kindness, and, always, the rich tapestry of Gypsy and Traveller life. I am also grateful to Danny for allowing me to contribute a few poems myself. We hope you enjoy it. Karl Wiggins.
