Did I finish Winter Garden, or did Winter Garden finish me?

OH MY GOSH THIS BOOK šš¤ Absolutely one of my new favorites by Kristin Hannah, author of Winter Garden. WOW. This Winter Garden book review can't express how much I loved it!

The beginning of this story unfolds slowly, but I've noticed that's a common characteristic of Kristin Hannah's books⦠you don't realize how deeply you've connected with the characters until you're shedding tears in the final pages. However, with *Winter Garden*, I found myself a bit bored and waiting a little too long to hear their mother's fairytale. The past and present timelines were interwoven seamlessly. Each scene, and the overarching themes of hardship, heartbreak, family, and the profoun...

One of the best books I've ever read. Period.āāāāāThe five-star rating that this book deserves ā no, demands ā makes me question all the other books I've given a five-star rating to. A five-star rating should really be elusive, hard to achieve. But sometimes, when you're gripped by a good book, you get a little fast and loose with your ratings. Well, I'm guilty of it from time to time. I'm officially admitting that, "My Name is Crumb, and I'm a Five Star Rating Junkie." **Kristin Hannah's Winter...

Once again, I'm completely blown away by the power and beauty of Kristin Hannah's words. She gives readers the incredible ability to step right into the story and see the world through her characters' eyes. Her stunning gift for capturing the heart-wrenching and deeply emotional aspects of every connection completely captivated me with this family. Every single one of them. By the time I reached the end of *Winter Garden*, I was nowhere near ready to let them go. So many people find themselves i...

I picked up "Winter Garden" for a couple of reasons. First, I recently devoured "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah, and since it was one of the best books I've read lately, I was itching for more Hannah! Second, I chose this one from her many bestsellers because of the WWII theme (yeah, no surprises there if you know me at all). So, what went wrong *for me* was that it wasn't quite what the blurb implied. Instead of a story about two sisters uncovering their mother's experiences in Leningrad du...

Just finished this dud, and I've got a headache from all the eye-rolling. *Winter Garden* is disappointingly formulaic, borrowing heavily from *Sophie's Choice*, which is a vastly superior novel. The writing is just plain ordinary. The characters are cardboard cutouts and completely insufferable. I can't stand novels where every single character has to be gorgeous. We're told again and again and again about the mother's "astonishing eyes" and the eldest daughter's "curvy hips," big eyes, and "Ju...

If I could, I'd give the first half of *Winter Garden* one star, the middle to the final chapter five stars, and the final chapter three stars ā so I guess, all in all, a three-star rating is probably the most accurate. This is the second Kristin Hannah book I've read where I've actively DISLIKED the main characters through the first half (the other was *True Colors*). Nina and Meredith are the daughters, Anya is the mother ā and, as someone said in another review, I really wanted to smack all t...

Stick with it through the first half; the second half of *Winter Garden* is incredibly moving and well worth the wait. Kristin Hannah uses a past and present tense narrative, a format I often enjoy in novels. It's almost like reading two separate stories in one book.
What begins as a strained relationship between two American-born sisters and their Russian-born mother evolves into something much deeper. Grief and a deathbed promise reluctantly bring these unhappy women together, revealing an in...
