Alistair Stuart MacLean (Scottish Gaelic: Alasdair MacGill-Eain), the son of a Scots Minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941, at the age of eighteen, he joined the Royal Navy; two and a half years spent aboard a cruiser were to give him the background forHMS Ulysses, his first novel, the outstanding...

🦅 I always loved Alistair MacLean's adventure books when I was a kid. You might remember the film starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. This story is a real thrill ride, and honestly, I think the book, Where Eagles Dare, delivers a grittier, more authentic feel to this WW2 spy action thriller than the movie did. If you're looking for thrilling book reviews, check out Where Eagles Dare! 🦅

Alistair MacLean's books have sold over 150 million copies, making the British writer one of the best-selling historical fiction authors of all time. And then there's me, saying, "Meh." I'm not really saying that, but I knew something felt different from the writing I was used to. After a little digging, I found out that the outline for "Where Eagles Dare" was written around the same time as the screenplay for the film of the same name, with only a few aspects slightly modified. Or, at least, ad...

I first read Alistair MacLean's Where Eagles Dare back in high school. A friend lent me his copy, and I devoured it (figuratively speaking, of course!). I think I finished it in a day or two; it's a seriously fast-paced read. This is an action-packed, adventurous espionage thriller set during World War II, and while it doesn't delve too deeply into character development, it more than makes up for it with vivid descriptions of the setting and plenty of exciting action sequences. I found it incred...

Back in the 70s when I was in school, I devoured Alistair MacLean novels like so many other teenage boys. WH Smith was overflowing with his books, often featuring covers tied to the movie adaptations. MacLean wasn't just a wildly successful author; his novels fueled some of the biggest films of the 60s and 70s: *The Guns of Navarone*, *Ice Station Zebra*, *The Golden Rendezvous*, *Breakheart Pass*, and, naturally, *Where Eagles Dare* were just a few.Revisiting *Where Eagles Dare* as an adult has...

This was a significant read for me on several levels. It's the most famous book by my favorite author from when I was a teenager. My closest friends gifted me a signed first edition (signed not only by Alistair MacLean but also by two of the actors from the film, which was based on his screenplay) for my 50th birthday. Plus, it marks the 1000th book I've added to Goodreads since I began uploading my new and old reviews just under 18 months ago (on 1/1/17).It's a quintessential Alistair MacLean n...

“Why didn't you shoot him?”“I'm a changed man, boss.” Schaffer sighed. “Something splendid has just come into my life.”“Besides, you didn't have a chance.”“Besides, as you say, I didn't have a chance.”This used to be a favorite book of mine when I was a teenager. I was completely riveted by it. I found it cheeky, exciting, daring, and funny.I hadn't read Alistair MacLean's *Where Eagles Dare* in... well, let's say 20 years. It was still amusing, tense, and exciting, even though there were some o...

MacLean basically invented the WWII suspense thriller. In *Where Eagles Dare*, a crack team of Allied specialists parachutes into Germany on a daring mission: rescue a captured American general. The team's led by a Brit, Smith – brought to life by Richard Burton in the film – and aided by Schaefer, the American, played by Clint Eastwood. Absolutely worth a read. The movie adaptation is a must-watch too, as is that *Pinky and The Brain* cartoon that hilariously spoofs the film. If you like Alista...

"When no other option offered there was no point in figuring the percentages."- Alistair MacLean, Where Eagles DareI recently picked Where Eagles Dare up. I've got several (5-7) MacLean books laying around fighting to be read. I think rewatching the movie version of The Guns of Navarone a couple of months ago with my family moved his books a bit higher up my list. I forgot how nostalgic these books make me. I came from a military family. These 1960s movies and books are part of my DNA. I grew up...
