Gina Buonaguro's *The Virgins of Venice* transports the reader to Venice in 1509. We're immediately introduced to Justina Soranzo and her family. Born into nobility, but facing financial ruin due to her father's poor investments, Justina believes she'll marry her brother's best friend, whom she deeply loves. Instead, she's sent to a convent, while her younger sister Rosa marries into a wealthy family, only to find her new husband is cruel. From here, things only worsen for these characters and t...

This was an absolutely entrancing story. Gina Buonaguro really brings historical Venice to life in *The Virgins of Venice*, and it's like stepping through a time portal to watch the story unfold. It’s clear the author did plenty of research to make this so realistic. I loved Justina from the start, and found her to be a compelling lead. She faces odds that seem insurmountable at times, but does an excellent job of confronting them head-on. Despite women at the time being treated more as property...

This is a fairly lengthy book, but it manages to hold your attention. I haven't delved much into historical fiction previously, and I found "The Virgins of Venice" by Gina Buonaguro quite enjoyable. Actually, I think "The Virgins of Venice" would make a fantastic TV series, given all the drama and twists that come to light. Just when you think things are starting to settle, something else pops off. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat.
I really felt for Rosa. Being compelled to marry a ...

It's 1509 in Venice, and sisters Rosa, 13, and Justina, 16, are happily dreaming about what's to come. Rosa has her eye on Teodor, the gondolier, and Justina is head-over-heels for Luca. But their father, drowning in debt, has other ideas. He ships Justina off to the San Zaccaria convent and promises Rosa to a nobleman named Zago Zane. Both girls are heartbroken.
"The Virgins of Venice" follows their lives over the next few years as they struggle to make their way down paths they didn't choose,...

Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
This was a superb read! I absolutely loved the opportunity to travel back to sixteenth-century Venice and see behind the walls of the San Zaccaria convent, just as much as I loved the chance to see how women fared with the social stratification, class barriers, and social rigidity in this maritime republic. If you're looking for historical fiction book reviews, this one's for you.
I always feel drawn to read books about strong women who question social nor...

This book is a page-turning historical drama that totally gave me all the feels! I won't drop any spoilers, but I was completely captivated by the historical accuracy. Gina Buonaguro nails it when it comes to bringing the era to life, especially shining a light on the appalling treatment of women and girls. Reading about what the young main characters go through wasn't always easy, but honestly, that's part of what makes "The Virgins of Venice" so powerful. It really brings their reality to life...

Justina is the oldest daughter of a noble family in 16th-century Florence. Like many families of the time, she's sent to a convent. But instead of religious education, she gets a crash course in scandal, debauchery, and, most of all, secrets. Justina is in love with Lucas, a lord and good friend of her brother Paolo. Lucas returns her affections. However, when he asks his father for permission to marry Justina, he's told a more advantageous match is planned. Lucas, the dutiful Italian son, marri...

"The Virgins of Venice" – there are only a handful of books that keep you so engaged from the beginning to the very end, and Gina Buonaguro has brilliantly accomplished it with this one! It’s a true page-turner.
This story provides fascinating insight into the lives of noble women in 16th-century Venice, faced with the limited choices of marriage to a man or 'marriage' to the church. Finding a path to be with your true love is only a dream rarely realized.
The subtle exploration of forbidden ...
