The Red Rider by Randall Allen Dunn is a thrilling, dark reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood. But Red—or Helena—is far from a helpless victim. Not anymore. The young girl who once found her grandmother dead, only to be attacked and permanently scarred by a wolf, has transformed into a relentless hunter. And these aren't your average wolves. They are the Lycanthru: human by day, and unnaturally massive predators by night. Now, they are the ones who fear Helena. She has mastered the secret to des...

I really enjoyed this fresh, unique take on the classic Red Riding Hood story. In The Red Rider by Randall Allen Dunn, the heroine, Helena, is a fascinating character. She constantly grapples with the memory of her younger, helpless self while being forced into the role of a fearless protector tasked with hunting down the monsters that stalk the night. The scars on her face from that long-ago attack are visible, but it is clear that the emotional damage runs much deeper. It’s the kind of trauma ...

When I started The Red Rider by Randall Allen Dunn, my first thought was: Oh no! Not another first-person female POV. I had read so many lately, and I was really hoping for a change. But, to my surprise, Red’s voice wasn’t annoying at all, and she easily pulled me into her story. The book is well-written; it’s a brilliant retelling of the old Red Riding Hood story with a fresh twist and a much stronger Red. The action was steady and built to a satisfying climax.I did have a hard time with the sh...
