Despite the looming threat of war in 1940, elderly John Howard, reeling from some devastating personal news, seeks solace in a quiet fishing holiday in France. Unfortunately, the Nazis abruptly cut his holiday short, forcing him to make a hasty return to England. A family he meets at his vacation spot implores him to take their two children back to England for safety, and after some deliberation, he agrees. However, traversing France as the Germans advance proves perilous and fraught with obs...

A truly wonderful and inspiring story. While it doesn't mention the inspiration behind it, I couldn't help but wonder if *The Pied Piper: A Wartime Journey* had some basis in real events. I'm really starting to appreciate Nevil Shute's writing; this was only my second book by him, but I found the tale of a brave, 70-year-old British gentleman leading a diverse group of children out of occupied France and back to England utterly compelling. If you're looking for great wartime stories or Nevil Shu...

I've felt like a kid in a candy store lately; my books have been that good. Here’s another one that's virtually unread these days, but it's such a charming story and so well-written. One of my favorite writers is Nevil Shute. He has a style that is easy to read and so absorbing, and absorbed is exactly what I was from the moment I opened **The Pied Piper: A Wartime Journey** and found two Londoners sipping Marsala in their “club” during a bombing raid. Of the two, one is an older man who has a t...

Every author has their own unique style. How would I describe Nevil Shute's? His books have this undeniable "feel-good" quality, yet they don't shy away from tackling difficult themes. Like classic fairy tales, you get moments of suspense and genuine scariness, but by the end, you're left feeling utterly content and satisfied. It's said that *The Pied Piper: A Wartime Journey* is based on a true story. But nobody really calls it non-fiction. There are just too many coincidences for me to accept...

4 stars. Read Oct. 2020.Another superb novel by Nevil Shute. Just as good the second time around. The story is set in England in 1940. John Howard, a 70-year-old man, has recently learned of the death of his son, an RAF pilot. Grieving, he decides a vacation to a favorite spot will do him some good, so he plans a trip to the Jura region of France in the spring, hoping to see the wildflowers in bloom. I wanted to be right there with him, and in a way, I was, thanks to Shute's beautiful descriptio...

Ah, this is easily one of my all-time favorite books! Nevil Shute is just a wonderful writer. His characters are so ordinary and believable, yet they're also extraordinary and wonderfully good. He gives me faith in humanity, in the world, and in the power of just calmly going about doing what needs to be done. Most people really *are* like this! The narrative builds from a calm center, growing more and more compelling and urgent. The protagonist, a 70-year-old British gentleman, goes fishing in t...
