3.5 stars. Robin Jarvis returns with The Oaken Throne, a fantasy novel that feels both grounded and deeply atmospheric. If you’re a fan of immersive world-building and character-driven storytelling, this is a must-read book review. Jarvis manages to craft a narrative that draws you in with its unique charm, even if the pacing occasionally feels a bit uneven. The Oaken Throne stands out as a solid addition to the genre, offering readers a richly detailed escape. While it might not be perfect, the...

BLOODY HELL. I might never recover from that ending in The Oaken Throne by Robin Jarvis. If you're looking for a gripping fantasy read that packs an emotional punch, this is the book review you need to read.

I was lucky enough to have Robin Jarvis visit my secondary school to give a talk on writing that really inspired us kids. He even sold his books at the end and signed copies for us. After hearing his vivid descriptions of Vesper the bat, I knew I had to pick up a book featuring that character, so I bought The Oaken Throne—not even caring that it was the second installment in a series. I still own and treasure that signed copy today, and I find myself re-reading it every now and then.

It’s probably been 15 years since I first read The Oaken Throne by Robin Jarvis, but I can still vividly remember the ending because it absolutely wrecked me. If you’re looking for a fantasy book review that highlights a story with genuine emotional stakes, this is it. Even after all this time, the emotional impact of this series remains unmatched.

A little bit Shakespeare, a little bit Canterbury Tales, and a little bit Tolkien. The Oaken Throne is one of Robin Jarvis' more unique outings; it dives deep into the backstory of the long-standing animosity between the bats and the squirrels that was only hinted at in the original Deptford Mice trilogy. It might not be everyone's cup of tea—there is some genuinely bloodthirsty stuff in here—but some of the chapters are surprisingly powerful. If you are looking for a gripping fantasy book revie...

I honestly believe there should be an entire series dedicated just to this book. I personally find myself desperate to see what happens next to these characters. When you read a story this captivating, you truly become one with the characters, and I feel like I need another installment to move forward; until then, I’m just frozen in time, going through the motions. If you are looking for your next great fantasy read, The Oaken Throne by Robin Jarvis is an absolute must-read that will leave you c...

I absolutely loved this book—it is easily one of Robin Jarvis's best works. There is nothing quite like getting completely lost in a story that features a plot twist so shocking it takes your breath away, followed by an ending that will truly bring a tear to your eye. The Oaken Throne is beautifully written and has quickly become one of my favorite book reviews to share; it is a must-read for any fantasy fan.

Dark, yet completely absorbing. It is packed with action and delivers a truly tragic twist at the end. Don't go into The Oaken Throne by Robin Jarvis expecting daisies and sunshine. Instead, prepare yourself for murder, cannibalistic rituals, conniving squirrels, eerie hares, interspecies romance, ghosts, and all manner of ghastly things. With pure evil rising from the earth, this book is one hell of a ride. If you are looking for a gripping dark fantasy book review, this is a must-read that del...

This is the second novel by Robin Jarvis that I've picked up, and I continue to be amazed at how dark and genuinely unsettling a story about squirrels, bats, and mice can actually be. I really enjoyed the characters and the immersive world Jarvis created in The Oaken Throne, but the evil forces presented in this book are truly frightening. If you are looking for a gripping fantasy book review, this series is a must-read for those who like their animal adventures with a touch of gothic grit.

I really need to start remembering that Robin Jarvis’s books are essentially dark fantasy and horror wrapped in a deceptively charming package. I was genuinely surprised by how grim The Oaken Throne gets, but it is undeniably a fantastic read. It’s a quest story featuring animal protagonists, yet it tackles heavy themes like prejudice, religion, and the eternal struggle between fate and free will. I grew deeply attached to the main characters—which, as I’m learning, is a dangerous game to play w...
