Of all the books I read in 2022, Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones sparked more conversation than all the others combined!
The Lovely Bones opens with the tragic death of fourteen-year-old Susie Salmon (like the fish). From there, we follow Susie’s family and friends, as well as Susie’s murderer.
The Lovely Bones starts incredibly strong, creating an almost irresistible urge to keep reading. However, the book goes downhill from there.
Starting a book with a death is quite unusual. Most authors...

I came to Alice Sebold's *The Lovely Bones* after seeing the movie, which was my first introduction to the story. First off, I loved the movie and have watched it countless times. The scenes set in Susie's In-Between world are some of my absolute favorites. And the moment when Susie's father destroys his ships in bottles? Iconic. It keeps popping up on my YouTube because I've rewatched it so often. If I go a couple of months without seeing it, YouTube's algorithm is like: "Here, watch it again!"...

I'm finally free of this book, "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold.
I can finally put it down. It haunted me. Alice Sebold's writing is beautiful, yes, but devastating. "The Lovely Bones" isn't just a story; it's an experience. A deeply unsettling, profoundly moving experience. If you're looking for a light, breezy read, steer clear. But if you're ready to confront the darkness and find beauty in the ashes, then dive in. Just be prepared to carry it with you long after you've turned the final pa...

After all the buzz surrounding *The Lovely Bones* by Alice Sebold, I was dying to read it and see what all the fuss was about. Let me tell you, I was seriously let down.
How did this book become such a global phenomenon? It's a total slog, dull as dishwater, and I couldn't connect with any of the characters. Honestly, I ended up disliking pretty much everyone in it.
The basic concept had potential, even if it's not exactly groundbreaking, but I just don't think the author made the most of it. ...

This book, "The Lovely Bones" by Alice Sebold, has single-handedly shown me that I spend too much time skimming and not enough time really reading and thinking about the books I've been reading. I have two kids, so I'm busy, and I often find myself reading when I'm stealing time or tired. But that's not even an excuse for this book. When I initially read "The Lovely Bones", I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but not bad. I liked the concept and the fact that the girl was the narrator. I li...

Hated it. I'm one of those OCD literary nerds who adopts a war bunker mentality with books I've started and dislike: "I will see this through to the end." For "The Lovely Bones," I made an exception.Somewhere, sometime, someone told Alice Sebold she could write. That person should be made to apologize to me, in person, and to all other poor souls who were duped into buying this schlock. The literary press also needs to break out the cat-o'-nine-tails for a serious flogging. Lev Grossman of Time ...

I've got to say, The Lovely Bones has to be the most baffling, poorly written, jaw-droppingly awful book I've ever laid eyes on. It's a truly dark tragedy that the words in this book were arranged in that specific order, published, and then distributed. How on earth did this become popular? Is it for the same reason that "My Humps" hit number one? I mean, I don't technically believe in burning books, but this novel seriously made me consider it. About burning The Lovely Bones, that is.If it serv...

I spent over a year working at Borders, usually stuck on the boring registers during slow nights. I'd lean there, chin in hand, staring at the shelves, actually wishing I could help customers find what they were looking for. It sounds crazy, but I think that's what happens when you confine anyone. The thing is, if I wasn't a register girl, I could have constant, real contact with the books themselves. All that aside, one book I stared at the whole time was *The Lovely Bones*, because it was lite...

Two-dimensional, stereotyped characters:- Mother: Living with the regret of losing her independence to the demands of child-rearing. The tragic loss of a daughter accelerates her departure from those heavy burdens and into the arms of the detective working the case.- Father: Obsessed to the point that he neglects the living members of his family, destroying his relationship with his wife. Only in her absence is he able to fall in love with her “all over again.”- Detective: His ‘sob-story’ past (...

One book, two rapes. How's that for a bargain? (The book only advertises one.) Yuck. The book in question is Alice Sebold's *The Lovely Bones*. I'm not giving anything away by saying it's a book about a girl (the narrator) who was murdered. That's revealed in the book's second sentence. It's also not a big deal to let you know she was raped and murdered by a neighbor, George Harvey. That all is related pretty early on. What isn't revealed until maybe the last fifty pages is that the girl herself,...
