Tracy Chevalier's *The Last Runaway* is a beautifully written story about a white Quaker woman who arrives in America in 1850. She was supposed to get married, but after catching her fiancé with another woman and then suffering the loss of her sister, she finds herself at a crossroads. She still goes through with the marriage, but her mother-in-law is opposed to helping runaway slaves due to past legal troubles. Despite this, Honor Bright persists in her own beliefs and actions.

Oh, Goodreads. Why can't you allow for half-star ratings? If you did, I'd give *The Last Runaway* a solid 2.5 stars. For the cover art, though, 5 stars all the way. But I digress. Tracy Chevalier's *The Last Runaway* explores the Quakers' involvement in the Underground Railroad during the mid-1800s. We experience this era through the eyes of Honor Bright, a recent immigrant from England. Honor is a twenty-year-old who (like many twenty-somethings) discovers that professing moral ideals is one th...

I didn't enjoy "The Last Runaway" as much as I anticipated. I'm a fan of Tracy Chevalier, I love historical fiction, and I'm drawn to books set in this era. That's why I'm giving it a three-star rating, but it's definitely on the lower end of that scale. My main issue with "The Last Runaway" is the wishy-washy protagonist, Honor Bright. She simply drifts along with events, embracing silence to the point where she seems devoid of thoughts, and most importantly, I just didn't find her sincere. Hon...

I'm still trying to figure out what made Tracy Chevalier's *The Last Runaway* so gripping last night. I was up until 3 am, completely unable to put it down, and I think it all comes down to Honor Bright. She's such a sympathetic character, and I was desperate to know what happened to her.*The Last Runaway* tells the story of Honor Bright, a young Quaker woman who flees England to escape a past she didn't create. She tries to find her place in American society in a small Ohio town. Chevalier popu...

This novel, "The Last Runaway" by Tracy Chevalier, was pleasant enough. However, reading it gives you a sensation of floating above the story – nothing really pulls you in or connects with your emotions. The story just feels too lightweight.
The first hundred pages are largely dedicated to quilting patterns and sewing techniques. That's fine if you're into detailed descriptions of domestic life, but a reader picking up "The Last Runaway" based on the cover description might be disappointed. It ...
