Alistair Stuart MacLean (Scottish Gaelic: Alasdair MacGill-Eain), the son of a Scots Minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941, at the age of eighteen, he joined the Royal Navy; two and a half years spent aboard a cruiser were to give him the background forHMS Ulysses, his first novel, the outstanding...

I enjoyed it; the setting was fantastic, and it brought back distant memories of the film – I'll have to rewatch it! The journey was far more arduous than the destination itself. Goodness, the hardships they endured to get there! Once they managed to get inside, everything was relatively "easy." If you're a fan of war novels and war movies, this is a classic. Rating: 7.75/10. Synopsis: On the solid rock of a cliff on the island of Navarone, in the Aegean Sea, stands the impregnable fortress of t...

Another incredibly neat, action-packed story from Alistair MacLean. *The Guns of Navarone* is full of plot twists and complications that constantly push the successful completion of the mission to literally the last page. The protagonists are very likeable, making this a highly recommendable read. If you're looking for a thrilling adventure novel, look no further than *The Guns of Navarone*. Definitely one for the best adventure book reviews!

Re-reading *The Guns of Navarone* for the first time since I was a teenager. It must have made a real impression because I remember it pretty vividly! It's just good, old-fashioned, daring action set in World War II. You won't find complicated political intrigue or emotional baggage here, just straightforward good guys trying to rescue other good guys from the clutches of the bad guys. Alistair MacLean delivers cracking adventure writing at its finest. If you're looking for a classic war adventu...

I practically wore out the VHS of this movie growing up, so it was definitely time I finally read the novel, *The Guns of Navarone*! If you're looking for a great war novel, keep reading. “Let’s get away from this joint. Gettin’ downright unhealthy round these parts.”It was impossible not to picture Gregory Peck as Mallory, Anthony Quinn as Andrea, and David Niven as Miller while reading *The Guns of Navarone*. Just like the film, *The Guns of Navarone* is fast-paced. Alistair MacLean doesn’t wa...

Once again, an Alistair MacLean story translates brilliantly to the screen. Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, and David Niven deliver stellar performances. This is an action-packed and thrilling World War II adventure. It follows a commando unit dispatched on a perilous mission: to destroy a seemingly impenetrable German fortress. This is **The Guns of Navarone** at its finest. Will I enjoy the book, **The Guns of Navarone** by Alistair MacLean, as much? I'm not so sure, as I don't find MacLean's writi...

Overall, I wasn't a fan of how the action was narrated, and frankly, there wasn't much action to begin with. There were way too many descriptions, and a lot of them felt repetitive. Too much dialogue that dragged on forever with excessive stage directions.

It lacked fluidity. The ending really became a slog to get through. If you're looking for exciting war stories, Alistair MacLean's *The Guns of Navarone* might not be for you. Consider this review before diving into *The Guns of Navarone*.

The Guns of Navarone is a story of sacrifice and vigilance, following a small group that deals a significant blow to the enemy. The main characters are consistently resilient men, devout, morally upright, and utterly indomitable. Two thousand starving, sick British soldiers are trapped on an island called "Kheros" in the Greek islands. The only way to reach this island is through the Navarone Strait. However, German forces controlling Navarone have blocked the passage of British warships by ins...

So, Wikipedia tells me that while the island of Navarone itself is fictional, the story in Alistair MacLean's *The Guns of Navarone* is rooted in the very real Dodecanese Campaign. This was the Allies' push to take back the Greek islands held by the Germans in the Aegean Sea back in '43. Apparently, the book draws inspiration from the Battle of Leros, and those massive coastal artillery guns—some of the biggest used in WWII—that were initially built and used by the Italians before the Germans to...

A classic thriller. Alistair MacLean always delivered the goods. I remember devouring all of his titles from the library back in the day. I wouldn't suggest reading them all back-to-back, because things can get a little repetitive. But that's to be expected of almost any author. The concept – having a team as the only way to take out the guns guarding a narrow strait that ships need to pass through to rescue troops – is a bit contrived. But it makes for a tight thriller with a ticking clock.What'...

4.5 StarsI stumbled upon this book and started reading it completely by chance. From the very first page, Alistair MacLean, the celebrated author of war thrillers, grabs your attention. The story is set off the coast of Turkey in the Aegean Sea, where the Germans and Italians control a cluster of islands and the vital shipping lanes. On one of these islands, 1200 British soldiers are trapped, facing an imminent attack from the Axis forces. Their only hope lies in the destruction of the formidabl...
