The children yearn for the mines
Not me, though. Y'all stay safe. "The Devil in Silver" by Isabel Cañas sounds intense, and I'm good on that. Maybe I'll stick to lighter book reviews for now!

Demon possession, but make it yearning.Girls don’t want boyfriends, they want alchemists with mercury-stained hands who will help them banish the unholy spirits tormenting their souls, am I right?I didn’t expect that I would describe a horror novel about possession as beautiful and elegant. And yet, The Devil in Silver is exactly that. Isabel Cañas somehow delivers chills and horror written in luminous, lyrical prose. The writing itself is so good that I found myself staring at the page in awe.B...

This book was something I didn't know I needed. I started reading *The Devil in Silver* by Isabel Cañas when I was in a bad place and feeling very down. And I think that's partly why it took me almost 3 days to complete this book, even though it's really short. So, yeah, this helped me escape quite a lot. I think this one really helped with my sanity. I was afraid that I would actually spiral, lol.So, I went in with zero expectations, and what can I say—it was such a pleasant experience. I just ...

One of my most anticipated reads of 2025, and I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed. I didn't hate "The Devil in Silver" by Isabel Cañas, but I didn't exactly love it either, especially compared to some of her earlier books. As always, Cañas's writing is immersive. She has a real gift for transporting you back to 18th and 19th century Mexico. I usually love how she blends gothic horror with romance; it always feels perfectly balanced. But something about "The Devil in Silver" just didn't qu...

A blend of historical fiction, gothic romance, suspense, and outright horror.
- Demonic possession adds a chilling layer.
- Silver mines, mining history, and alchemy provide a rich backdrop.
- A compelling female character fights for control amidst difficult circumstances.
“The Devil in Silver” is Isabel Cañas's third novel, and if you've enjoyed her previous works, "The Hacienda" and "The Vampires of El Norte," you won't be disappointed by this unique blend of genres. In many ways, "The Devil ...

Dripping with blood on the cathedral steps, looking absolutely gorgeous all alone? Where giving into your inner demons is not only sexy but morally justifiable. Given the current state of affairs, now more than ever, I crave stories about blood-soaked women, the kind who fight tooth and nail (wink, wink) for their futures in a world hellbent on possessing and demonizing them. With that burning desire in mind, Isabel Cañas's *The Devil in Silver* landed in my hands. This latest novel from Cañas i...

Alba is all set to marry her childhood best friend, who seems pretty safe (read: I don’t think she’s his type), and wouldn't you know it, a plague starts sweeping through Mexico. So, naturally, she gets whisked away to her fiancé’s family’s silver mine. And oh my god, why is his cousin so mysterious and hot and *mysterious*? Oh, sweet Jesus, is that unadulterated, unapologetic yearning I detect? This, on top of her mom being a total drama queen 24/7, is enough to drive Alba completely bonkers, b...

So, yeah, *The Devil in Silver* was good. Really good. I honestly thought I was going to hate it when I was a few chapters from the end, but… nope. Isabel Cañas really had me going there for a minute, I'm not gonna lie.
*The Devil in Silver* is about, well… a devil in silver, obviously. But it's also about patriarchy and colonialism and the Catholic Church and toxic family and revenge, and it’s all quite dark and gothic-y and entertaining. There's definitely some romance, and I generally despis...

Isabel Cañas’ *The Devil in Silver* is a spellbinding blend of gothic horror, historical fiction, and forbidden desire, all set against the haunting backdrop of an 18th-century Mexican silver mine. The story centers on Alba, a young woman fleeing the plague who seeks shelter with her fiancé’s family. But instead of finding safety, she begins to experience terrifying hallucinations, uncontrollable convulsions, and an overwhelming sense that something dark is taking hold of her.
