The Consequences of Anna is presented as fiction "inspired by a true story." Frankly, that claim is dubious at best. It would be fascinating if Kate Birkin would share the details of the novel’s supposed inspirational origin story. I'd love to know what exactly inspired this... thing. In my attempts to learn more about Anna, James, and Rose, I've found absolutely nothing. There's a complete lack of source references or citations in the book. And I couldn't find any independent evidence that th...

Do you ever wonder if a book was written by AI? Because the writing in *The Consequences of Anna* feels incredibly basic, almost childish, but then it throws in these weird, obscure words like it's trying too hard to sound smart. It's like Kate Birkin just grabbed a thesaurus and went wild.Speaking of Kate Birkin, I tried looking her up, and found absolutely nothing about her or Mark Bornz (the other author) anywhere online except for their Amazon page, which is basically a mirror of their websi...

I'm left wondering if Kate Birkin had a thesaurus and a SAT prep book glued to her side while writing "The Consequences of Anna." Words like: abyssopelagic, plenary, bavardage, eventuates, nugatory, coruscating, nescient, deleterious, etc. pop up on every single page. Yes, I generally know what most of those words mean. I just wasn't impressed. The constant shifting in perspective—from third person to first, and jumping between all three characters' points of view—felt jarring and made for a con...

This was a seriously long book. It's supposedly based on a true story, a love triangle set in 1920s Australia and spanning the Great Depression. The story itself is interesting, but the author's use of old-fashioned language is a real distraction. There were other little quirks that kept me from totally loving "The Consequences of Anna" by Kate Birkin. I would still recommend it, though, if you're interested in the historical setting. So, if you're looking for historical fiction book reviews, th...

This book, "The Consequences of Anna", is far too long, bogged down with unnecessary details and repetitive scenes. The author, Kate Birkin, had a strong premise, but the execution feels shoddy. If you're looking for a quick and engaging read, this isn't it. Consider this less of a glowing book review and more of a cautionary tale.

This Australian gothic novel has absolutely everything.A couple lives a quiet life on a sprawling sheep farm perched atop a cliff overlooking the sea. Their peaceful existence is upended when Anna's American cousin arrives. Before long, all three are entangled in a strange and compelling romantic love triangle. The atmosphere is rich, the prose decadent. I found myself rereading passages simply because they were that good. The storyline in "The Consequences of Anna" is groundbreaking and utterly...

Kate Birkin's *The Consequences of Anna* was an absolute epic, not just in length, but in its masterful writing. Birkin weaves in uniquely Australian colloquialisms you won't find in any dictionary, enriching the narrative with a wealth of beautiful language. It’s genuinely heartbreaking to witness the devastating consequences of untreated mental illness, not only for those struggling with it and making poor life choices, but also for the innocent, caring individuals who become targets or are cl...

This is a truly brilliant read. The plot and storyline are wonderfully well-written, and I was completely engaged from the very beginning. I love how well-fleshed out the characters are; they felt so believable and real. There's a great balance of drama and romance, all set within a wonderfully constructed world. I can't wait to see what Kate Birkin brings out next. Highly recommend reading it! I read a complimentary advance copy of "The Consequences of Anna"; this is my voluntary and honest re...

This story delves into the weight of decisions and the repercussions that follow when those decisions aren't carefully considered. Anna embarks on a journey fueled by a desire for personal happiness, regardless of the impact on others. The early loss of her mother and sister casts a long shadow over her life, a grief she never truly overcomes. There were moments when I felt compelled to embrace Anna, and others when I wanted to shake her with frustration. One fateful decision she makes irrevocab...

Kate Birkin's *The Consequences of Anna*, co-authored with Mark Bornz, is a story rooted in true events from a small Australian town in the 1930s. Anna May's peaceful life on a remote farm with her husband is upended when she agrees to grant her cousin, recently returned from the USA, a wish that could change everything. Anna sees helping Lottie conceive a child with her husband, James, as an act of pure selflessness, something that will not only make her cousin happy but also strengthen their b...
