Stephen Graham Jones is the NYT bestselling author thirty-five or so books. He really likes werewolves and slashers. Favorite novels change daily, but Valis and Love Medicine and Lonesome Dove and It and The Things They Carried are all usually up there somewhere. Stephen lives in Boulder, Colorado. I devoured this book in just a few days, which is lightning fast for me. It's a gripping historical horror novel centered around a – well, I'll use the term "vampire," though Stephen Graham Jones goes to great lengths not to use that term, and for good reason. There are chills and scares galore, but it's much more than just a horror novel. Jones uses vampirism to explore powerful themes: identity, guilt, revenge, forgiveness, and memory. All set against the backdrop of the American West and, spe...

I know words. I speak them, hear them, read them, write them. I practically live on them. But the words in "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter" just didn't compute for my scatterbrain. The prose was so inaccessible to me. I felt like a kid eavesdropping on adults debating the moral decay of society.
I spent the *entire* time I was reading Stephen Graham Jones's "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter" trying to decipher the sentence I was currently on, never look...

"What I am is the Indian who can’t die. I’m the worst dream America ever had."
I've enjoyed several of Stephen Graham Jones’s books, but nothing could have prepared me for "The Buffalo Hunter Hunter." This is a truly unique reading experience.
Glancing at the dust jacket, you might think you know what you're in for: a Western where a Blackfoot man becomes a vampire and unleashes his vengeance on white America for the slaughter of his tribe and family. But that initial impression barely scratch...

The Blackfeet Tribe has a dark history in America. Let's face it, America's got a *lot* of dark history, and we might be creating more even as I type this. What Stephen Graham Jones's *The Buffalo Hunter Hunter* does is enlighten readers about some of that history, and it entertains while it's at it. Because this tale is told by a Native American vampire to a priest. Yep. A vampire and a priest. Think 'historical fiction book reviews' meets horror.
The narrative is framed by a woman receiving a...

This book, The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones, was difficult to get through. The writing was just incredibly difficult to follow...Listen, this self-proclaimed bookworm reads all kinds of stuff. I was excited to read The Buffalo Hunter Hunter based on the description and cover, but that excitement waned as I turned page after page. I read Stephen Graham Jones's other novel, Mapping the Interior, and loved it. This one just didn’t hit right.I struggled to stay interested, to be cap...

2 starsThe blurb had me hooked. Seriously. That pretty much sums it up.This book could knock me out by 7 PM, no joke. It’s honestly the most boring book I’ve ever read. Which is saying something because it’s about a vampire. And not the Edward Cullen, sparkly-in-the-sunlight kind, mind you. This one’s supposed to be a historical, gothic, terrifying bloodsucker.I deserve a medal for finishing this book. Seriously. Every night, I’d pick up The Buffalo Hunter Hunter, and every night, I’d find myself...

Horror hits different when it’s built on the bones of real, genocidal history. The blood, viscera, and supernatural vampire horror are plentiful in *The Buffalo Hunter Hunter* but it pales in comparison to the real horror story: the brutality of colonization, the events of the Marias Massacre, and the hunting of the buffalo to near extinction.
*The Buffalo Hunter Hunter* dredges up the historical truth of the massacre, reminding us of the ways history is often written by the victors/colonizers,...

I honestly don't even know where to begin. *The Buffalo Hunter Hunter* is an outstanding horror novel, but it's not exactly a pleasant read. It's totally enthralling, but not exactly *enjoyable*. The historical bits are interesting, but also deeply disturbing. I read the last 40% in one sitting because I was so invested in the story, but I was disgusted by pretty much all of it. So, did I love *The Buffalo Hunter Hunter* or did I hate it? Well, a little bit of both, I think.
First off, the trig...
