In a Nutshell: A contemporary fantasy-thriller that blends low fantasy and time travel with the timeless battle of good versus evil. The plotting is absolutely mind-bending! I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel from beginning to end, despite a few minor quibbles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Plot Preview:New York City. Cassie, who works in a bookstore, is taken aback when her favorite customer leaves her a book after he passes away. The book seems to be filled with strange writing and drawings, ...
I'm not exaggerating when I say this *could* have easily been a 5-star read… if Gareth Brown hadn't written it. Seriously, "The Book of Doors" had so much potential.
I'm just so over male authors mentioning a female character's breast size as if it's crucial to the story. And honestly, why was the main character being flat-chested even presented as a negative? Because she couldn't use her cleavage to carry books? Give me a break.The plot in *The Book of Doors* felt flimsy, the descriptions were like an alien's first shot at describing Earth, and many of the locations were reduced to tired stereotypes – think croissants in Lyon. Seriously?A heads-up for anyon...
3.5 StarsAfter a long-time customer passes away while visiting the bookstore where she works, Cassie Andrews finds herself in the possession of a strange little book, *The Book of Doors* – a magical book that leads Cassie and her friend Izzy to wherever they desire, opening any closed door to their destination of choice. Unbeknownst to Cassie, this special book is one of a unique collection - each of which possesses unique magical powers that can be harnessed for good or evil. The books have bee...
I honestly can't remember the last time I read a book this special. Filled with magic, wonder, and mystery, The Book of Doors simply took my breath away. More than anything, though, it was profoundly thought-provoking, managing to transport me to another world with the stroke of a pen. In more ways than one, it reminded me of The Neverending Story mixed perfectly with Recursion. Quite the potent combination, if I do say so myself.
I didn't know what to expect before diving into this book, and, ...
Okay, here's the deal. I'm not usually one to hate on books. If I don't like something, I'll give it a low rating, maybe write a quick one-sentence review on Goodreads, and just move on.But with *The Book of Doors* by Gareth Brown… I've got a LOT to say.First, the things I actually liked about this book:1. The cover is gorgeous. If I had enjoyed the story, it would be a book I'd be proud to display.2. The premise sounds amazing: Magical books? Time travel? A main character who works in a booksto...
A truly magical read for book lovers everywhere. New Yorker Cassie is feeling a bit lost, mourning her grandfather and spending her days working in a bookstore...until a very unusual book, "The Book of Doors" by Gareth Brown, comes into her life from a mysterious customer. "The Book of Doors" has the power to transport Cassie anywhere in the world she can visualize, but danger follows as others plot to steal the book for themselves. A lovely read, and one I'll be recommending to many. If you lov...
Thanks to Netgalley and William Morrow for the chance to read *The Book of Doors* as an eARC in exchange for an honest review. If you’re not a fan of negative reviews, you might want to skip this one. Possible minor spoilers ahead (just a few quotes taken out of context).
*The Book of Doors* is being marketed to readers who loved *The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue*, *The Night Circus*, and *Babel*. Since those are three of my all-time favorite books, you can imagine how excited I was for this o...
If you could open a door to anywhere, where would you go?
4 Magical Stars!
I'm going to keep this short for right now... I LOVED this book! It kinda reminded me of the show (not the graphic novels) of Locke & Key. You know how there are multiple keys that do multiple things in that show? Well, books act in that same way in this story.The main book we learn about is The Book of Doors that our FMC Cassie is gifted. A book that will open any door and take you anywhere you want to go—anywhere,...
Gareth Brown's *The Book of Doors* presents a dreamy formula for fantasy readers, complete with time travel, an epic battle between good and evil, and the tantalizing idea that the source of superpowers is intertwined with books. In this captivating narrative, seizing the most powerful books bestows wealth, invincibility, and unrivaled supremacy upon the possessor. As readers, we've always known that books are the most precious treasures in the world, and this riveting, action-packed, and magica...
