The best part about DNFing "The Bewitching" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia? I don't have to read about this girl hooking up with her uncle! (If you're looking for honest book reviews, you found one.)

Tedious, predictable, and narrated by someone utterly uninspired.Despite my hopes, Silvia Moreno-Garcia's *The Bewitching* wasn't frightening, authentically Mexican, or dark academia enough to create any real atmosphere. The elements that usually draw me into these kinds of narratives—intertwined historical periods—just fell flat here. Plus, there are some pretty gross incestuous "spicy scenes" 🤮And the narrator? I couldn't stand the strange pauses, the bizarre emphasis she placed on words, and...

Unfortunately, "The Bewitching" just wasn’t for me. I ended up DNF’ing it at 15%. The cover was gorgeous and totally pulled me in, and of course, the idea of any kind of witch story – gothic, historical, or modern – instantly had me hooked. But, being kind to myself, I recognize that not every book, even by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, is going to be a winner for me. I'm always on the hunt for great witchy reads, but this one just didn't click.

**4.5 stars rounded up**Minerva grew up listening to her Nana Alba's stories, filled with bizarre happenings, superstitions, magic, and witchcraft. These tales shaped Minerva's interests as she grew up, something many of us can probably relate to.Now, Minerva is a graduate student at a prestigious Massachusetts college, focusing on the history of Horror Literature. Specifically, Minerva is researching the life and work of Beatrice Tremblay, a lesser-known author of macabre tales who once attende...

Gosh, I was so looking forward to this one. Ended up throwing in the towel. Yep, this is what...my third DNF...ever?
Three separate timelines and multiple characters in each. I'd just get invested in one and then, poof, we're in a completely different place and I'm struggling to remember: wait, who are these people? How are they related?
Sorry, too much jumping around for anything to gel for me. Bummer. I couldn't get into Silvia Moreno-Garcia's *The Bewitching* at all. I'm always on the looko...

The strongest feeling I had while reading this was, "Girl, that's your uncle 😭"! Seriously though, Silvia Moreno-Garcia's *The Bewitching* really makes you question some life choices. This book is definitely one to talk about, if you're looking for witchy historical fiction. #bookreview #historicalfantasy

This isn't your typical witch story – not even close! Told across three different timelines, The Bewitching is absolutely mesmerizing, intriguing, bizarre, mysterious, and thought-provoking. Three women are told, "Back then, when I was a young woman, there were still witches." But these aren't your Disney witches, and they definitely aren't what you'll find if you follow the yellow brick road. These witches are on a whole other level. Alba, Minerva, and Beatrice are three women connected by fasc...

“Back then, when I was a young woman, there were still witches.”This book is amazeballs. Or that's what I'd say if I were the type of person to use the word “amazeballs,” anyway, which I totally am not. Ahem. The Bewitching is a witchy blend of horror and historical fiction that weaves together three distinct timelines (1998 and 1934 Massachusetts and early 1900s Mexico) into a captivatingly creepy multigenerational saga that will keep you reading long into the night. If you're looking for capti...

Dangerous witches, powerful curses, and unseen, unidentifiable entities lurking in the shadows—this supernatural tale intertwines three timelines into a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat and make you leave the lights on for a month. Yes, I’m sold! This is another masterful supernatural horror from Silvia Moreno-Garcia that I simply couldn’t resist. It’s gripping, terrifying, and endlessly fascinating—proving yet again her unmatched talent in the genre. If you're looking for a thr...

UPDATE Is there a playlist? Yes. One of the timelines is set in 1998, so it's mostly alternative music from that decade.
