I did it!! I always feel so accomplished finishing a fantasy novel because, you know, I'm not typically a fantasy reader. BUT, if you’re like me and find world-building and complex magic systems intimidating, definitely read Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry! I was just a wee bit annoyed by all of the internal questions the main character asked herself—like, girl, shhhh for 5 seconds—but it leaves us on a maaajor cliffhanger with so many open-ended questions, which makes me even more excited fo...

Seriously, drop everything and read Shield of Sparrows NOW!!!!I am completely obsessed! The delicious slow burn. The enemies-to-lovers tension that crackles. The incredible world-building. The captivating fantasy plot. And OH MY GOD, THE ENDING. I genuinely loved every single thing about Shield of Sparrows and could not put it down for a second 🤭🤭🤭But the thing I loved most? The characters. I love that our main character isn’t some typical warrior badass, but she’s strong in so many other imp...

"You are mine. Even if we are kingdoms apart, you are mine. But I'd rather not be a kingdom apart." This was interesting, and I had a good time with it, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me the way I'd hoped. I'll admit, I went in with unrealistically high expectations, which probably contributed to it falling a bit short. I enjoyed the world-building; it's unique and unlike any other fantasy I've read in a while. I really enjoyed how immersive it felt. But the pacing was off for me the whol...

Sometimes, the real monsters aren't the ones with claws, teeth, and scales. They're the main characters who can't stop asking rhetorical questions as a narrative technique.I wanted to give this five stars, I really did. Because buried somewhere beneath the constant noise of Odessa's thoughts, there's a fantastic story with yearning, action, and mind-bending twists... But *Shield of Sparrows* showed me it's somehow possible to be completely captivated and totally annoyed at the same time.Odessa's...

I don't say this lightly: *Shield of Sparrows* was terrible. I'm truly, truly hoping that the eARC I received is different from the physical ARCs because WOW. Y'all HAVE to be lying in your reviews. 🫠- Do you like questions? Do you enjoy when the main character's internal thoughts are question after question after question? The record was 10 in a row. TEN. Entire paragraphs were dedicated to her asking herself questions. "But Sarah, were the questions worthwhile?" Absolutely not. Each chapter w...

4.5🤩⭐️“Not all monsters are born from the gods, my queen. Some of us were made……..”✨❤️🔥Okay, I know how this sounds, but hear me out: I feel like I've read this story a million times… and yet, I absolutely LOVED *Shield of Sparrows*!!Seriously—why does it feel like there's a literal romantasy template floating around that authors just pull from?🤨🤔🧐We've got: • Misunderstood outcast FMC 🔥 • Thrown into an arranged marriage for political gain 💍 • Off on some epic quest ✨ • Gets captured by...

Do you like questions? Like, *really* like questions? Do you enjoy entire paragraphs written as questions? Both spoken by the female main character and swirling around in her head? Seriously though, do you enjoy *repetitive* questions? Page after page of the same whining? The same darn questions over and over? Does the thought of reading a 500-page story told through a never-ending stream of questions make you want to claw your eyes out?And what about… incomplete sentences? Half-formed thoughts?...

Okay, so… this was *very* Shield of Sparrows. Let me break it down for you.If you put Shield of Sparrows next to Fourth Wing, the basic structure is practically identical. And I'm going to prove it by showing you what I imagine the brief from Red Tower looked like when they sent it out to potential romance authors. (Purely hypothetical, folks! Don't sue me, Red Tower.)*Adding this edit for anyone confused about why I'm only comparing this to Fourth Wing and not other romantasy books, even though...
