Recent Reads: Land of Mist and Snow. Debra Doyle and MacDonald have masterfully reimagined the historic clash between the Monitor and the Merrimack, transforming it into an epic, elemental sea battle. This is a must-read naval fantasy that breathes new life into historical fiction. If you are looking for your next great book review recommendation, this genre-bending tale is well worth your time.

While Land of Mist and Snow by Debra Doyle isn't exactly a bad book, it is undeniably strange. Seeing casual magic woven into an American Civil War setting felt a bit jarring. The story does a good job of showing how characters lacking magical abilities were naturally superstitious and wary of those who could wield such power. The magic system itself, while central to the plot, isn't explained in much detail; it remains shrouded in mystery, and at times, leans into a darker tone. While Columbia a...

Land of Mist and Snow by Debra Doyle is a solid read, but I felt the final action sequences could have used a more grounded, Walter Williams-style conclusion; the resolution was a bit too hard for me to buy into. Also, I think the title could have been more fitting for the story. If you are looking for an engaging book review of this title, this is a must-read for fans of the genre.

It’s an alternate history, American Civil War, naval fantasy blend that you won’t want to miss! Lieutenant John Neavis, having been stuck behind a desk for far too long, is thrilled to receive his new assignment aboard the USS Nicodemus. However, things start to get a bit strange when he’s tasked with delivering cannons and cannonballs—all made of virgin brass, never before cast into any other form. When he’s ordered to head far north, he’s even told to surrender every piece of iron on his perso...

I’m giving Land of Mist and Snow by Debra Doyle a solid three stars. I picked this up because I’m a huge fan of Civil War books and naval fiction, but honestly, it doesn't quite hit the mark for either genre. Instead, it feels much more like a fantasy novel, focusing on two rival ships powered by elementals that engage in a long, drawn-out chase across the Atlantic. I really enjoyed the writing style—the author uses journal entries from various characters to tell the story—and the prose itself ...

I've finished it again... because there is, apparently, a sequel out there that explores the same alternate history setting and time period. If you are looking for a captivating historical fiction read, Land of Mist and Snow by Debra Doyle is definitely worth adding to your bookshelf.

I pushed myself to finish Land of Mist and Snow by Debra Doyle simply because of the intriguing premise on the back cover. Honestly, I’m disappointed; it just never lived up to its potential. The concept of a ship possessed by a soul—or something along those lines—sounded fascinating, but the execution felt messy. It was genuinely difficult to follow, and I didn't even grasp what was happening until I was halfway through. This book could have been an absolute page-turner, but it fell completely ...
