Snow White, the Magic Mirror, and that damn apple.Except Snow isn't the main character, and the mirror (mirrors) actually leads to a shadow world that is dominated by an evil queen. It's the recognizable mixed with some brand new, and it really worked well for me here. It also introduced a new twist on the Snow White folklore mythology, as T. Kingfisher takes the jump scare of our mirror images acting independently to a whole new level. The skinny gist is that our main character is a young(ish) w...

I can't resist fairy tale retellings. All those beautiful princesses, all their tragic misfortunes, and of course all the furry creature companions. What's not to like? And since Snow White is at the top of my list, there's no way I was going to pass this up.And right away, I thought we were off to an auspicious start. We meet Healer Anja—your typical smart, independent, poison drinker. Her research has saved quite a few folks from certain death, and she would like to continue to do so in peace ...

I was a little skeptical about whether I'd be interested in a Snow White retelling that doesn’t center Snow White as the female main character, and that's on me for not trusting T. Kingfisher's pen. Seriously, with *Hemlock & Silver* by T. Kingfisher, she's done it again. This book is a fantastic fantasy read, perfect for fans of dark fairy tales and anyone looking for a unique twist on a classic story. Kingfisher delivers yet another unforgettable tale.

I’m surprised to realize how much I genuinely enjoyed this book, Hemlock & Silver by T. Kingfisher.
“I just want to save people and then have those people go away and, ideally, not take arsenic again. Is that really so much to ask?”
By now I’ve figured out precisely what works for me in most books by T. Kingfisher. It’s her signature narrative voice — the offbeat gentle humor with touches of snark here and there, the slight crotchety side to the inner monologue that often echoes the inner mess...

For me, "Hemlock & Silver" by T. Kingfisher is easily one of the best books of 2025. Seriously, a must-read!
I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator was absolutely spot-on. It elevated the whole experience and made it even more immersive. Perfect casting!
The story takes its cues from Snow White, but honestly, it feels more like a completely original story than a simple retelling, which made it way more engaging for me.
The world-building is subtle but utterly magical, and the c...

Why does it seem like nobody else has noticed that T. Kingfisher recycled the plot of Thornhedge as the "solution" to the "mystery" of Snow's poisoning in Hemlock & Silver?I got roasted for calling her out on that one plot point, and yet here we have people showering praise on this retelling, calling it one of her best.I disagree. I don't think it's her worst, but it's neither her best nor a good one for me. And not because it's a retelling that doesn't stick to the fairy tale plot—that's ir...
