Endurance is a gripping historical novel that tells the story of the brilliant Australian photographer Frank Hurley. While it is clearly a work of fiction, author Tim Griffiths has masterfully used Hurley’s own diaries, original photographs, and other primary sources to ensure the core of the story remains authentic. The book covers the decade between 1910 and 1920, a transformative period when Hurley was in his twenties and thirties. With visceral, punchy descriptions, Griffiths recounts Hurley...

Endurance is a gripping novel based on the real-life adventures of Australian photographer Frank Hurley, who joined the historic Mason and Shackleton expeditions to Antarctica. It’s a story that rings with authenticity, offering an intimate look at the men who lived and worked in the shadow of their legendary expedition leaders. Beyond the ice, Hurley also documented Australian troops on the Western Front during WWI, bearing witness to the utter devastation of Ypres and the heartbreak of Passche...

A fascinating look at the early life of Frank Hurley, the photographer who captured the raw reality of Mawson and Shackleton’s Antarctic expeditions, as well as the harrowing trenches of the Western Front during World War 1. Written as historical fiction from Frank Hurley’s own perspective, Endurance by Tim Griffiths is consistently engaging, often shocking, distressing, and occasionally macabre. The sheer lack of prior knowledge, the haphazard preparation, the primitive gear, and the unforgivi...

I found Endurance by Tim Griffiths quite an interesting read. Just keep in mind that it is a work of fiction; even though it is inspired by the real-life adventures of Frank Hurley alongside Mawson and Shackleton, and his experiences during WWI, it is not a biography. As an Aussie, I’ve undoubtedly seen plenty of Frank Hurley’s iconic photographs at the Australian War Memorial and elsewhere over the years, but I had no idea of the incredible adventures he undertook or the risks he took just to c...

Having prior knowledge of figures like Frank Hurley, Ernest Shackleton, and Douglas Mawson made reading Endurance by Tim Griffiths a truly captivating experience. This historical novel transported me from the desolate, frozen landscapes of the Antarctic to the brutal battlefields of World War I. The vivid storytelling made me feel as though I was right there alongside Frank, witnessing these monumental events unfold firsthand. If you are looking for a gripping historical fiction book review, thi...

I loved being transported back in time to follow the incredible adventure of a truly remarkable man, Frank Hurley, starting from his boyhood. The author, Tim Griffiths, does a fantastic job of capturing the unique atmosphere of every era and setting as we journey through life alongside Frank. It is clear that this was achieved through the author’s deep knowledge of the subject matter and his gift for painting memorable images that we, as readers, can easily visualize. I packed Endurance by Tim Griffiths for my holiday in Malaysia, and while it took me a couple of weeks to get through it, I knew I had to see it to the end. Since this is the first book I’ve read by this author, I’m already counting down the days until his next release. The writing is so immersive that you feel like you’re standing right there beside the characters, experiencing every one of their torments and trials firsthand. If you're looking for a compelling new read, this book is well worth...

I received a copy of this book from Goodreads. I thoroughly enjoyed Endurance by Tim Griffiths. It is a fascinating story, and it is clear that plenty of research went into it. For me, the main downside was that it tells the story of a photographer, but there are no accompanying photographs included. With those, it would easily earn another star. A map would have been a nice addition as well, to help visualize the journey more clearly. Still, it is well worth the read if you are looking for a gr...

“…every photograph reveals and conceals. And one thing I have learned, even with photographs, is that people still see only what they believe” Endurance is the debut novel by Australian lawyer, arbitrator, and author, Tim Griffiths. James Francis "Frank" Hurley was a legendary Australian photographer and adventurer who participated in several Antarctic expeditions and served as an official photographer for Australian forces during both World Wars. In this compelling historical fiction, Griffith...
