Duties and Dreams: A Second Chance Novel, the last installment in John A. Heldt’s Second Chance series, finds the extended family of the Carpenters and Lees with new additions, aspirations, and ambitions. Life is good for the blended Carpenter-Lee clan, living together in Hermosa Beach, Southern California, 1918. But the three time-traveling siblings, Bill, Annie, and Paul, know the storm clouds of World War I are far from lifting, and there is also the small matter of a Spanish Flu epidemic he...

I suspect I would've enjoyed this book a whole lot more if I'd read the first two in the series. There were so many references to past events that would have added depth to this story and made it more engaging. "Duties and Dreams: A Second Chance Novel" is a time travel novel, which is always a bit mind-bending to wrap your head around. Bill, Annie, and Paul are siblings who left 2022 and found themselves in the early 1900s. This installment picks up during World War I, with Paul and Annie's hus...

In Brief Duties and Dreams: A Second Chance Novel brings the Second Chance trilogy to a close, delivering a heartwarming and perfectly fitting conclusion to the second lives of three siblings whose bond has remained strong and beautiful across time and space. The year is 1918, and while Bill and Annie have settled down with spouses and children, Paul remains a bachelor, delighting in spoiling his nieces and nephews. However, World War I looms, abruptly pulling Paul and his brother-in-law Andy in...

In the concluding book of the Second Chance series, the Carpenter siblings—Bill, Paul, and Annie—are now living in Hermosa Beach, Southern California, in 1918. Thirteen years have passed since they literally took a leap of faith into a fountain in remote Mexico, which both restored their youth and health and transported them back in time. Ever since starting over, they've survived the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, the loss of a loved one in the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, wars, and much ...

Imagine having the power to live your life all over again. Would you take that chance, knowing you might end up in a time when the world was vastly different from our tech-obsessed present? The Carpenters did just that – they took a leap of faith, plunged through the fountain of youth, and landed in 1905 in The Fountain. Now, we rejoin the Carpenter siblings in Southern California near the end of World War I, specifically 1918. With two young men in the family, Paul and Andy, who are of draft ag...

"Duties and Dreams: A Second Chance Novel" was a fantastic conclusion to a wonderful series! I think it might be my favorite book in the "Second Chance" series (although the first two books are still amazing). This book introduces fun new characters, a suspenseful storyline, and plenty of sweet moments. At this point, I'd follow the Carpenters and the Lees anywhere. I only wish there was more of their story to read! If you're looking for heartwarming book reviews, definitely check out this serie...
