DNF at 2%I'm sorry, I know *Elephant Song* was written over 30 years ago, but when you compare female elephants to women/teenage girls, saying they are both "ripe for breeding" around age 15/16, I don't care how old or how scientifically based Wilbur Smith's book is supposed to be, I just can't accept it. Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but that's really something I don't want to read in my books, so off it goes...Erratum: This book, *Elephant Song*, is over 30 years old, not 60, so it's even wor...

After a somewhat questionable elephant hunt, a former soldier and game warden discovers a plot to steal the resulting ivory, a scheme that will inevitably involve a lot of bloodshed. Chasing down the perpetrators forces him to operate outside the bounds of the law, and even beyond the borders of Africa, where he encounters the familiar “activist” love interest. This isn't nearly as cynical as Wilbur Smith's books from the '70s. I suspect Smith mellowed out as he got older. It’s hard to maintain t...

There's arguably nothing better than a Wilbur Smith novel to transport you to the heart of Africa. Ivory smuggling, avenging a friend's murder, human ambition, and the death of innocent people and animals through murderous actions—what isn't in this book, Elephant Song? Journeying alongside Dr. Daniel Armstrong, you'll come to understand: Our scars tell the story of our resilience.

3.5/5.0 If you're looking for thrilling adventure books, Wilbur Smith's 'Elephant Song' is a must-read!

June 23, 11:30 AM ~~ Review ASAP.5:30 PM ~~ Wilbur Smith wrote tons of books, many that involved whole families of fictional characters like the Courtneys and the Ballantynes. But he also produced quite a few standalone titles which are just as thrilling as the series books. When I learned in 2021 that Smith had passed away, I checked what titles of his I owned and ordered *Elephant Song* and a memoir. And one of these days I will dig up the four other standalones I own and reread them. Two are a...

All I knew about Wilbur Smith's *Elephant Song* going in was that it was set in Africa. The cover promised "Abounds with action and suspense". And after finishing it... yeah, it had plenty of action and some suspense. But what was this book *really* about?!? The plot definitely wasn't the main focus. At its core, I guess it's a revenge story – and don't get me wrong, I LOVE a good revenge plot. But this one was too dark, random, and ridiculously over-the-top. No, I'd say it's ABOUT a specific pe...

A journey into the heart of Africa!
A good book, but it sags in several places... I think about 150 pages were unnecessary!
My real rating would be 3 stars... the 4th is because of my weakness for Africa! A solid adventure novel by Wilbur Smith, but be prepared for some slower sections. *Elephant Song* could have been tighter, but the descriptions of the African landscape are captivating.

Wilbur Smith has always been fantastic to me. I previously read Smith's Ancient Egyptian series in Makhdum Ahmed's translation, which was amazing. However, this translation of *Elephant Song* didn't feel the same at all. There are countless printing errors. While reading, it felt like the translator was rushed, or maybe there were budget constraints. But Smith's writing style and subject matter saved the book to some extent. Reading the original would probably be a better experience. :) If you'...

This was a real page-turner, easy to get into, with a story that just pulls you along. However, some bits stretched the imagination a little too much, and I struggled to believe them. The violence felt a bit excessive at times too. The elephant culling scene and what followed were truly awful to read. If you're looking for exciting adventure books, Wilbur Smith's *Elephant Song* delivers, but be warned, it doesn't shy away from the brutal realities of its setting.

I honestly don't get why so many people rave about "Elephant Song," maybe it's just me. I was really into it for the first hundred pages or so. I found the scene with the elephants incredibly moving, the plot had me hooked, and the main bad guy felt like a complex, intelligent villain. But then it just nosedived...I could stomach the gore and the rape – I kind of expected it in a book like this. People forget how brutal reality can be. But it was the sexual pleasure that Cheng felt after seeing ...

After journeying through the Utopian vs. Dystopian saga of the Hunger Games, I've now entered the world of Wilbur Smith novels. As a welcoming ceremony for entering a new literary dimension, I leafed through the author's standalone novel, i.e., a novel that isn't part of any of his other series... *Elephant Song*... and I was pleasantly surprised. So far, I've only read a few literary works – young adult, paranormal, fantasy, detective stories, sci-fi, and a few more. Coming across *Elephant So...
