Charlaine Harris has been a published writer for over forty years. Her first two books were standalones, followed by a long sabbatical when she was having children. Then she began the Aurora Teagarden book, mysteries featuring a short librarian (eventually adapted for Hallmark movies). The darker Lily Bard books came n...

(C+) 67% | Almost SatisfactoryNotes: It's a total clown car of sex (as far as coitus goes), but fun if you like a plot that's petite: all trashy, trampy, batty/campy, and bloodless (hardly any heat).*Check out progress updates for detailed commentary: Progress updates:10/18/2025 - Preamble(1) I've just finished an audiobook I chose for Halloween, but it wasn't scary nor very Halloweeny. Given there's still time left, I decided to try and fit this in.- Not that this is all that scary either, thou...

The first True Blood book:... you know, the 'Southern vampire' series that exploded into a global phenomenon thanks to that perfectly cast HBO show. We're plunged headfirst into THE definitive Southern vampire fantasy world, into Bon Temps, introduced to Sookie, Jason, Vampire Bill, and everyone else, just as they realize they've got a serial killer in their backyard. If you're looking for a fun vampire book review, check out Charlaine Harris's "Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1)". I'd ...

(C+) 67% | Almost SatisfactoryNotes: The supporting characters are flat and uninteresting, the plot is banal, and the mythology isn't explored to its potential. Charlaine Harris's *Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1)* has some serious flaws. While the world-building is intriguing, the execution falls short. If you're looking for compelling characters or a deeply engaging plot, this might not be the vampire book for you. It's an okay read, but far from a standout in the paranormal romance...

I honestly can't recall if I picked up the books before getting hooked on the show, or if my obsession with the show came first. But does it even matter? I was completely captivated by this world, and I still am! Charlaine Harris's **Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1)** is a fantastic start to a series that just pulls you in.

Mel 🖤🐺🐾 (P.S. If you're looking for **paranormal romance book reviews**, this series is a great place to start!)

I started reading this series because I was hooked on True Blood and had a bit of a thing for Eric. Now, these books are a total guilty pleasure. They're not literary masterpieces, and sometimes there's too much stuff we don't really care about (like fairies and shifters), but with all the steamy vampire action and murder mysteries... honestly, who even notices? Most of the characters are annoying and likeable at the same time, which is great – I've never been a fan of perfect heroes or heroin...

The first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I confess – I picked this up at the bookstore for a few reasons:1. The cover was sparkly, and I liked the art. 2. Vampires! Having spent a huge chunk of my youth hoping the vampires in Anne Rice's novels would knock on my window late at night (shut up, like you didn't???) I have been looking for the next Brad Pitt with fangs. (shut up, like you aren't???) And yeah. That was all it took. Sparkles and vampires – SOLD.I opened up the book and kinda re...

After a string of heavier reads, I was craving something light and trashy. But as "Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1)" by Charlaine Harris taught me, be careful what you wish for. Light? Definitely. Trashy? Oh yes. A resounding yes. But not in a good way – just plain, unadulterated trash. It's tough to pinpoint what I disliked more: the juvenile writing style or Sookie Stackhouse herself, that irritating, vapid, two-dimensional caricature of a Harlequin romance heroine. Sookie's a psyc...

Stephenie Meyer's got *nothing* on Charlaine Harris (...and that's putting it mildly!). Harris has more talent in her little finger than that other writer has in her whole body, and her massive fanbase proves it. *Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1)* is like a defiant middle finger to everyone obsessed with (and let's be honest, those with questionable taste who adore) the *Twilight* series. This book is a great reminder that not all fiction needs to be high art. This one has a clear, c...

Ugh. I really tried to give "Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1)" a fair shot. I went in optimistic, even after reading some negative reviews, because I really enjoyed the pilot of True Blood, the HBO series based on these books. However, "Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 1)" loses points right away because two of the most interesting characters from the show—Sookie’s sassy best friend, Tara, and Lafayette, the fabulous (in every sense) chef at the bar where Sookie works—either d...

🧛🏼‍♀️ December 2014 buddy read with Shelly, Carole, Evgeny, Karly, Jess, Allison, Catherine & Monty Cupcake 🧛🏼‍♀️💀 DNF at 50%.Sookie, Sookie, Sookie. Because of you most of my friends either hate me or think I'm a total freak. They think you're quirky, I think you're silly. They think your story is better than candy, I think your story is the most uninteresting ever. Sorry guys, I don't think this review is going to go well.I was recently told I was snarky and a cold-hearted, impatient ...
