** I am shocked to find that some people think a 2 star 'I liked it' rating is a bad rating. What? I liked it. I LIKED it! That means I read the whole thing, to the last page, in spite of my life raining comets on me. It's a good book that survives the reading process with me. If a book is so-so, it ends up under the b...

Maybe just the wrong time to read this?A six-year-old boy is dropped off on the doorstep to the royal family. He is the illegitimate son of a prince. He has no name. What is to become of this boy? Who will he turn into? What is in a name? The beginning of Assassin's Apprentice: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1 immediately had me hooked. It is incredibly moving and heartrending. Also, I really enjoyed the fantasy. It is what I would describe as realistic fantasy. Robin Hobb doesn’t go too far into worl...

It took me three tries to really get into *Assassin's Apprentice: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1*. I needed to be in the right headspace, because I wouldn't exactly call it a page-turner until I was about halfway through. Robin Hobb has built a believable, intricate fantasy world, complete with all the gritty, mundane, medieval details. You can practically smell the stables and taste the gruel, alongside experiencing the wonders of magic and courtly intrigue. It's a hugely comprehensive autobiograp...

A fantastic series kickoff with unbelievably good character developmentWhat a way to start a series! Honestly, if I were judging *Assassin's Apprentice: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1* purely on plot, it'd probably be a 3/5 stars. But when it comes to building characters, Robin Hobb deserves a solid 10/5. Seriously.Robin Hobb has this incredible knack for making you *get* who these characters are. You end up caring about them more deeply than in almost any other book I've ever read. The plot might ...

(3.5) I finally got around to reading this popular Fantasy series that's been sitting on my TBR pile practically since forever... and honestly, I'm pretty underwhelmed.I liked Robin Hobb's writing style, and I found the world and magic system engaging, but this has to be the most laid-back, least action-packed book about an assassin's training I've ever encountered. To be fair, things did start to pick up a bit in the last 100 pages, and I am planning on reading the whole trilogy to give *Assassi...

My journey into The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb has finally begun, and *Assassin's Apprentice: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1* is off to a fantastic start.Feel free to skip the next paragraph if you're itching to get straight to the review; it's just a bit of a preamble I need to write first. It's no exaggeration to say that The Realm of the Elderlings represents my biggest ever gamble when it comes to buying books. I basically bought it on impulse! You might call me superficial, but my in...

Reread this AGAIN because I'm planning to read all the books in the series! Hmmm... guess I should show you all my cool bookshelf with the books and some of my dragon figurines. Ah, maybe later 😘 Okay, well here it is... These were the lessons in my assassin's primer. And more. Sleight of hand and the art of moving stealthily. Where to strike a man to render him unconscious. Where to strike a man so that he dies without crying out. Where to stab a man so that he dies without too much blood w...

I haven't read a ton of fantasy in the last decade, so the fact I've devoured 12 of Robin Hobb's books in the last 5 years speaks volumes about how much I enjoy her work. The adventures of Fitz through three trilogies account for a big chunk of that reading.Robin Hobb has a rare skill for writing first-person narratives. She shows you a world through Fitz's eyes and makes it matter, makes it vital. Some elements of Hobb's fantasy are fairly old school, but written with a modern style and a liter...

I've noticed many fantasy authors get completely lost in their own internal world-building. Sometimes, this leads to incredible, nuanced detail that really enhances imaginative storytelling. But on the other hand, it can result in a creation that just doesn't translate that vision to the page, or to the audience. Basically, it's all in their head.*Assassin's Apprentice: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1* really shows this. Robin Hobb clearly poured her heart into crafting the world of the Six Duchies,...

This series is easily among my all-time favorites. I adore it so much that I own first edition hardbacks of Robin Hobb's *Assassin's Apprentice: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1*. It's a truly lovely, touching, and dramatic story. This book has absolutely everything you could want. If you're looking for a great fantasy book review, look no further than *Assassin's Apprentice: The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1*.
