S. F. Williamson is fascinated by the way languages are born and was surrounded by them long before she undertook a degree in French and Italian. From her Grandma’s rolling Scottish R’s and her Nan’s ability to slip from English to Welsh, to the dialect spoken in the French village she grew up in, Steph has always known...

overall rating: 4.5 ★genre/tropes: fantasy-romance, forbidden love (?), dragonsGotta give myself credit for finally dragging myself out of my slump 😔 I did it, besties! The book claimed it was for fans of Fourth Wing, romantasy, and enemies to lovers, and I was genuinely surprised because I wouldn’t have ever put it in that category myself. It was more fantasy with bits of romance, a forbidden relationship rather than enemies to lovers, and having dragons in the plot is the only thing similar to...

★ 3.25 stars ★ What to Expect: ➼ Morally Grey FMC ➼ Dragons x Humans ➼ Romance sub plot ➼ Set in Alternate 1920s London ➼ Debut YA Fantasy ➼ Political Intrigue ➼ Historical Fiction ➼ First Person POV This book made me realize how similar real life in the U.S. is to a fantasy novel right now, and I gotta say, it’s not nearly as fun as I always imagined. 😩😭 I was not prepared to draw so many parallels to real life while reading about the incredibly corrupt government detailed in "A Language of...

Just a heads-up, your enjoyment of *A Language of Dragons* is really going to depend on remembering it's a YA novel. Content warnings: death, war, physical assault, violence, classism, sexism. **What I Loved:** S.F. Williamson clearly knows their stuff when it comes to linguistics. *A Language of Dragons* really digs into the "power of language" and how it can be used to build up or tear down groups of people. While I wanted a bit more detail about the world itself, I was super excited to see W...

Sadly, this wasn't the book I hoped it would be. 𓍢⊹ ࣪ Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are my own. Let's start with the positives: I really enjoyed the plot! It was genuinely intriguing and hard to put down.Let's see if A Language of Dragons delivers on its promises:— An epic, sweeping fantasy - Yes!— Incredible dark academia setting - Not really— Slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance - Absolutely NOT! Not even close! More on that later— Unputdownable...

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for providing me a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.Okay, what the actual heck? Dark academia? Clandestine, slow-burn romance? *Pulls out magnifying glass. Looks through telescope. Studies the maps.* Nope, can't find it.I'm not even sure where to begin with all the problems I had with this story; there are just so many. The alternate British society didn't make much sense, and the story tried to tackle all sorts of themes, but I don't feel it d...

"Perfect for teen fans of Fourth Wing and Babel." So, is *A Language of Dragons* actually good or what? Those comparisons aren't exactly helping me decide.

This young adult novel blends historical fiction with fantasy, and I'm absolutely here for it! Honestly, S.F. Williamson had me hooked at the mere mention of dragons. 🗡️🐲"A Language of Dragons" revolves around a war involving dragons and young linguistic experts desperately trying to decode the dragon language for a strategic advantage. It's a seriously addictive, dark academic story, featuring a (very) slow-burn romance and morally gray, flawed but lovable characters. This book was totally my...

I haven't read Babel or Fourth Wing, so I can't compare *A Language of Dragons* to either of those. Honestly? That's a plus, because S.F. Williamson's book is seriously addictive and has rocketed up to become one of my all-time favorites! The author's note was such a unique and thoughtful touch, and this book is an absolutely incredible debut. I could rave about *A Language of Dragons* forever, but I'll keep it concise and stick to what I loved most. The characters feel so real, and their develop...

Here's how I see *A Language of Dragons*… Imagine taking all the nuance, political intrigue, corruption, and rebellion from *The Hunger Games* – you know, the stuff we missed as kids but became glaringly obvious once we grew up and realized our world is a complete mess… Now, take all that goodness and shove it into a reimagined post-WWI London, where dragons and humans coexist. Then, add in linguistics and translation à la *Babel*. Toss in some dark academia vibes. Include a morally grey femal...

My best friend, S.F. Williamson, wrote "A Language of Dragons," and she's honestly the most talented person I know. So, naturally, I'm completely biased in saying it's going to be the best book you've ever read. If you're looking for amazing fantasy book reviews, look no further!
