It is surprising how well this book is rated when, in my opinion, it is terribly written.Mafako is clearly a medical practitioner, and the story revolves around what happens in the CICU in the Children's Hospital in Biloxi. Mafako repeats himself often, and his lengthy descriptions of medical procedures become draining and quite boring to be frank. His characters are poorly developed. He fails to create three-dimensional characters where the reader gets to like or dislike a character or, even be...

This is a novel that reads like a memoir. It follows the story of Dr. Eric Philson who is recruited from Ft. Myers to the CHOB, Children's Hospital of Biloxi, in their pediatric care unit. He recognizes that there are major issues in the department: understaffing, procedures, paper records, etc., and he sees it as an opportunity to make a difference. However, all of his changes can't help the bureaucracy that runs the hospital, and after several years of attempting to be a positive influence, Er...

Burned out is an outstanding book about the health industry, while reading this book I learned a lot about ins and outs of a hospital and to be honest this is the very first book I’ve read in this gerne, it is fiction but the author, Dean Mafako clearly shared his experience in this matter. This book sure shows how lives can be affected by working in a hospital, the intense hours take a toll on the doctors lives, professionally and personally; but maybe what’s more important is how the heath syst...
