As the brutal winter of 1887 descends upon Colorado’s high country, cowhands, miners, townsfolk, lawmen, and even outlaws go about their daily routine, never suspecting their disparate lives are about to intersect in a freakish, though inevitable, series of events that will change them all forever. Metaphorically speaking, no one escapes this tale alive. Mark Mitten’s debut novel is not for the squeamish or the faint of heart. The landscape is harsh; some of the people even harsher. I think one of the biggest disservices to the historical fiction written about the push west in the United States, was labeling these books "Westerns". There are many good books in this genre, and this is one of them. It's a pity this genre is often overlooked. -1 star because I wished the stories would intertwine slightly more, but all in all a good historical novel about the people living in the mountains of Colorado post civil war.

This is a heckuva western novel that more than lives up to its unusual title. Mitten knows the conventions of the genre and then turns them inside out to create a sprawling narrative that ranges all over the state of Colorado. The cast of characters includes working cowboys, the worthy citizens of several Rocky Mountain settlements, and the members of an outlaw gang.Their lives converge on a fatal day in 1887 when a stage hold up is interrupted by a cattle drive. A traditional western might star...

If you enjoy historical fiction you will certainly enjoy reading this book. Set along the front range of the Colorado Rockies, this historical western fiction takes place during the time when the front range was 'open range' and beginning to change as people starting settling in the area.

The cast of characters is colorful. The plot is engaging. The many twists and turn keep you turning the pages.

This is the author's first published novel and hopefully it will not be the last!
