I'm still really enjoying the story, the intense space battles, and getting more insight into the enemy's perspective in Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 by Jack Campbell. However, that love triangle? For the love of Pete, and his dragon, MAKE IT STOP!!! If you're looking for an honest book review of this sci-fi series, it’s a great read, but the romantic subplot is becoming a major frustration.

Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 by Jack Campbell is starting to feel a bit like a potboiler, yet it remains an enjoyable read. I’m beginning to wonder if the author has a strong religious background, given how the love triangle dynamics unfold and the characters' intense reactions to some pornography they encounter. They are completely repulsed by it, but the nature of the content is kept such a mystery that I found myself wondering if they are simply shocked by the very concept of pornography i...

The fourth installment in The Lost Fleet series.
For those who need to know: there are maybe a handful of minor expletives used in the entire book, still no violence or gore, and absolutely no smut. There aren't even any fade-to-black romance scenes here.
Do you know what really puzzles me? The covers. The cover art features a military officer holding a weapon on the surface of some planet. But so far in this series, there are never any ground engagements. It's more of an elaborate game of Bat...

3.4⭐ Rounded Down*Updated 17/02/22 Rating adjusted; review added from 2022 re-read.That hibernating hero, Black Jack Geary, finally recovered after a century of cold sleep, is leading the crew in Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 closer to home. At this point, the series by Jack Campbell is starting to feel a bit formulaic, with the dialogue and plot beats beginning to repeat themselves. But honestly? Who cares? If you’ve stuck with this military sci-fi saga this long, you simply have to know what...

Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 serves as the fourth installment in Jack Campbell’s epic series, centered on a legendary, King Arthur-esque military commander who awakens from a long stasis sleep. He finds himself leading a desperate fighting retreat from enemy territory back to his homeworld. After barely recovering from a brutal setback at the Lakota System, Captain Jack Geary is determined to turn the tide and finally bring his fleet home.In many ways, this book feels like a continuation of t...

Re-Read Review: The constant bickering between Desjani and Rione felt even more grating during this re-read, especially since it highlights the author's clear bias. I would have expected a politician as sharp as Rione to wield indifference as a weapon, perhaps making Desjani jealous by subtly flaunting her past history with Geary. That is exactly what a seasoned politician would do! Original Review: *3.5 stars*The plot in Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 by Jack Campbell is so predictable that I ...

"Easy, light, and, frankly, a bit repetitive."
Genre: Science Fiction.
What it’s about: The fleet under the command of John "Black Jack" Geary has barely escaped Syndicate attacks in the Lacota system, though they’ve sustained significant damage. Geary’s decision to return to the system is so bold that his enemies—and even some of his own subordinates—would never expect it. The result is a standoff against a large number of ships, though most are either damaged or merely auxiliary vessels. Thr...

Black Jack Geary is back! Still trapped deep within Syndicate space, Geary and his fleet are finally starting to feel like they might actually make it home. They’ve shattered several Syndicate flotillas and are now just a few jumps away from Alliance space. What could possibly go wrong? Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 by Jack Campbell continues to exceed my expectations after an extraordinarily 'meh' start to the series. Honestly, after the first two books, I debated whether to keep going, but n...

Some parts of Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 by Jack Campbell really dragged—which is quite an achievement for a book that doesn't even hit 300 pages. At this point, Rione has become an almost unbearably obnoxious character to me. The first half of the book is essentially her being an irritating nuisance regarding her relationship with Geary, despite her constant insistence that it means nothing to her emotionally. As a female reader, I find it both annoying and mildly offensive that the female...

I still finished Valiant: The Lost Fleet, Book 4 in one sitting, but it’s starting to feel a bit formulaic:1) The fleet travels to another star system deep behind enemy lines and has to fight a battle.2) The main protagonist agonizes over being hailed as some kind of god-like hero when he’s really just a human.3) Some of the captains in the fleet try to undermine his authority to strip him of his leadership position.4) He agonizes again over the fact that he's being held up as a god-like hero.5)...
