Pre-readI hate dystopian novels.Anyway, predicting one star. 🤗Post-readNot as bad as I thought it would be, but still pretty bad. Boring, vapid, and lacking any real substance. There's a serious lack of creativity here. Like "Uglies," "Pretties," "Littlies," and "UGLYVILLE." I'm not even kidding, that's the name of the town where the Uglies live. Crazy, right? Like, at least try, dude.I'm honestly scared to run into Scott Westerfeld in real life. If you're looking for dystopian young adult books...

“In a world of extreme beauty, anyone normal is ugly.” In Tally Youngblood's society, everyone achieves absolute physical perfection – the perfect skin, hair, eyes, literally everything. At least, after you turn sixteen and get the right surgeries.Tally, at age 15, is an Ugly right now but after her birthday, she will become a Pretty. She can then move out of the Ugly Dorms and into New Pretty Town. It's all she wants. After all, who in their right mind would choose to remain Ugly? All she has ...

The hold this book had on middle schoolers everywhere, including me, was unreal. I was totally pretending I'd be some anti-plastic surgery rebel if I lived in that world. Realistically, I'd be 100% team sculpt-my-bones, change-my-face, and implant-a-hoverboard-into-my-ankles, whatever. Honestly, if this series was a test planted in the minds of 13-year-olds by the government, sign me up as "pro authoritarian government changing my thoughts so I'm bubbly and happy all the time." Ignorance tru...

I've read *Uglies* by Scott Westerfeld multiple times over the last decade or so, and somehow I've never written a review. Time to fix that! Although some of my feelings about it have shifted as I've gotten older, I can't shake the strong sense of nostalgia this book brings every time I pick it up. What drew me to *Uglies* when I was a teenager still resonates with me as an adult. I love how the story embodies the idea that true beauty comes from within, from who you are as a person, not just yo...

You know that feeling when you just REALLY want to punch a character right in the face? Well, Tally Youngblood, you should be thanking your lucky stars I can't see yours. Okay, rant over... *Uglies* by Scott Westerfeld was a pretty quick read, but I honestly don't get all the hype. Was it enjoyable? Sure. Was it *good* good? Not really. I'm not even sure if I'll ever finish the *Uglies* series, to be honest. Maybe if I'm incredibly bored one day. Looking for honest book reviews? This one's for y...

Nope, I couldn't finish it. Sigh. I really thought I was going to enjoy *Uglies* by Scott Westerfeld. It started off promising enough, but then it all just fell apart. Yes, that dramatic. Am I the only one who was deeply offended by this… well, let's just say I didn't like it? This book just felt wrong, wrong, wrong. The writing itself isn’t particularly… well, it isn’t anything, really. But this is supposed to be a book about Beauty with a capital B, and the writing doesn’t do the theme justi...

I swear, I need to avoid running into Scott Westerfeld in a dark alley, at a Civil War reenactment, at Charlton Heston's old place… basically anywhere. The deep-seated desire to not get arrested for murder would be in an epic battle with the overwhelming urge to grab whatever weapon's handy when I see his stupid face. To be fair, as you can see, I gave "Uglies" three stars, so let me clarify that my empty threats are really directed toward "Pretties" and "Specials" (books two and three in the se...

So, my wife and I occasionally swap books, which might seem a little kooky. However, you've got to keep things spicy when you've been married as long as we have, and since nipple showers with hot candle wax make me break out into shouts of “FUCKARELLA THAT HURTS,” we needed some alternative sizzle. So, she hooks me up with this little philly of a novel while I matched her with The Lies of Locke Lamora.Well… my wife loved the book I set her up with… as I knew she would because it is all-over awes...

I’ve only seen one episode of The Twilight Zone. In this episode, a woman undergoes a battery of surgeries to look normal. At the end of the episode, viewers learn that this latest surgery has failed: the woman is still hideous. Except that to the audience she is beautiful. Online research led me to another episode where teenagers are surgically altered to live longer and conform to a unified standard of beauty (based on a limited number of acceptable “models”). *Uglies*, Scott Westerfeld’s dyst...
