Think you know the Battle of Waterloo? Think again. This isn't the history you learned—it's a clash of empires, monsters, and time itself. 1815: Wellington's outnumbered army faces Napoleon, desperate for a miracle. That miracle comes in the form of monsters conjured by a mad scientist. Also, in 181...

Heather Albano is a storyteller, history geek, and lover of both time-travel tropes and re-imaginings of older stories. In addition to novels, she writes interactive fiction. She finds the line between the two getting fuzzier all the time.Heather lives in Massachusetts with her husband, two cats, a tankful of fish, and...

Okay, this was a fascinating way to kick off a series! I really enjoyed Heather Albano's writing style, and I especially appreciated how much research she put into the historical details. That made all the twists and turns in the story even more believable and fun! With little nods to classics like 'Frankenstein,' "Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel" was a wild ride.Elizabeth, the Regency-era heroine, got on my nerves a few times, but she definitely redeemed herself in the end. I liked her friend (...

The concept: Jane Austen-style characters travel through time to prevent Frankenstein’s monsters from winning the Battle of Waterloo and turning Victorian London into a polluted, Orwellian robot-controlled nightmare. The execution: Heather Albano's deft prose, careful characterization, and meticulous historical research brought the story alive from page one. On the eve of the Battle of Waterloo, Wellington’s situation is desperate. The French have inflicted massive losses, and he rightly fears hi...

Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel by Heather AlbanoAs I've said before, Steampunk isn't really my thing. And I'm not a huge history buff, though I do have a basic understanding of historical events. So, when the book kicks off at Waterloo in the middle of the battle, I'm pretty sure I know where we are and what's supposed to happen. Before writing this review, I actually stopped to tell my friend Virginia a few things I liked about Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel and give her a quick summary. When...

Read all my reviews on http://urlphantomhive.booklikes.comI'm always up for a time travel story, so count me in! The book has an interesting premise: people from different historical periods can visit each other. Plus, it's set in an alternate, steampunk London where monsters and the machines designed to control them are running wild. This is a perfect example of how things gradually spiral out of control, with the 'solution' often being even worse than the initial problem – and this happens with...

This is a really enjoyable story, and I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel. The characters are well-developed, and it's fun to see the consequences when you "mess" with time. It took me a little longer to finish than other books I've been reading recently, mainly because I was reading "Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel" on my Kindle and my reading time has been limited lately. I usually listen to books while I work. The length of time it took me to read "Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel" by...

DNF at page 92.Why?Because I'm unbelievably bored, and I've been slogging through this barely 300-page book for almost a month now. Also, I desperately NEED the time travel mechanics explained. Either that, or throw so many complicated words at me that I'm too confused to realize it's *not* being explained. *Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel* by Heather Albano does neither, and some characters even admit they don't know how the time travel works or where the watches come from. And nobody seems remo...

Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel by Heather Albano was an experiment for me, diving into a world of steampunk and time travel. To my surprise, it was overtly set in a very recognizable version of our own world, beginning on the day of the Battle of Waterloo. As the story progressed, it became clear that other fictional elements had been woven into the plot, most notably from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I suppose I had expected something set in an invented world, or at least one where the diverge...

It takes a certain amount of chutzpah to take the worlds of novels like Frankenstein, Pride and Prejudice, and The Time Machine and pull them all together around the Battle of Waterloo, but Timepiece: A Keeping Time Novel does it. Its steampunk sensibility flows cleanly from the plot. I'm looking forward to the next book by Heather Albano! If you're looking for unique fantasy book reviews, check this one out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this unique time travel story. Facing potential defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, Wellington enlists the 'Special Brigade,' a squad of barely controlled monsters. They secure victory for Wellington and the British, but the true cost won't be tallied until 70 years later. On that same day, Elizabeth Barton, constrained by convention and her parents' expectations of a 17-year-old lady in the early 19th century, and William Carrington, a slightly older young man wounded in the ...
