Harry Harrison's *Time Raider* is a peculiar, almost hypnotic ride through history, a collision of moral urgency, speculative daring, and the relentless momentum of action, yet what sets it apart is the way it folds human conscience into the machinery of temporal mechanics. It's a captivating read, perfect for fans looking for thought-provoking science fiction or historical time travel adventures.
Published in 1983, the novel is ostensibly a time-travel adventure, yet Harrison uses that conceit...

How have I never read this 1983 book until now?!Time travel, the Civil War, and compelling characters – it's all here in *Time Raider* by Harry Harrison. Just be aware that some of the language used reflects the era and might not be considered politically correct by today's standards. An ultra-secret lab, guarded by ridiculously tight security, is run by an obsessed colonel with delusions of grandeur. His goal? To alter the outcome of the Civil War by equipping the South with advanced weaponry. C...

Okay, so picture this: you've got this ultra-racist, present-day military nutjob who gets his hands on a super hush-hush time machine. What does he do? Zaps himself back to the pre-Civil War South to prop up the Confederacy with modern weapons and a pile of gold. Naturally, he's chased through time by a black dude who has to tiptoe through 1860 Dixieland just to bring this maniac to justice. It’s a batshit crazy idea, I know, but honestly, "Time Raider" by Harry Harrison is a total guilty pleasu...

I've always loved reading about history, which naturally led me to alternate history. For some reason, I've been fascinated by "what if" scenarios like: What if the South had won the Civil War? When I was a kid, I stumbled upon a book titled "If the South Had Won the Civil War" by Mackinlay Kantor (published in book form in 1961). I found it really interesting, especially because it was written like a history textbook (set in an alternate universe, of course). Kantor has Lee winning the Battle o...

I read *Time Raider* a long time ago, simply because I used to read *2000AD* comic, and in it was Slippery Jim DiGriz. From that, I began to read more and more of Harry Harrison's works. It was then that I borrowed a copy of *Time Raider* from the library, read it, and then read it again. I'm talking proper old-school science fiction here.
I found its impact on me to be very strong, not just from the nature of the book, but from the moral nature of its author. Harrison clearly was a very good m...

I'm a bit torn on this one. The time travel element in "Time Raider" was hinted at for *far* too long, especially considering it's so central to the plot and even mentioned in the title. Also, the 'good guys'' paralyzing fear of changing the past, which heavily influences their actions, made some of the later decisions hard to swallow and strained my ability to suspend disbelief. That being said, "Time Raider" wasn't a *bad* book. Harry Harrison's storytelling intrigued me enough to keep reading...

Meh. Harry Harrison's *Time Raider*? More like Time Waster. If you're looking for a gripping science fiction adventure, steer clear. There are far better book reviews out there pointing to superior reads.

I've been having a real hard time finishing books lately. I've been falling asleep practically after a single page. Whether I'm enjoying the book or not doesn't seem to matter. So, I thought I'd pick up one of my comfort reads, hoping it would jumpstart my reading mojo again. But even a book I've loved since I was a young teen, a book I've probably read about 10 times (usually in one or two sittings, max), couldn't break through my fatigue. To complicate things further, I came down with a nasty ...

Harry Harrison's *Time Raider* starts as a compelling mystery, quickly evolving into a time travel/alternate history adventure. Sergeant Harmon is tasked with investigating a massive gold heist and a string of brutal crimes, all linked to the disappearance of Colonel McCulloh.Harmon soon uncovers a clandestine government project: a time machine. Astonishingly, McCulloh has perfected the device, transporting himself and the stolen gold to the pre-Civil War era.The supposed thrill of *Time Raider*...
