"Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Time Patrol" is an undisputed science fiction classic and a masterpiece of alternate history, written by Poul Anderson, Nebula Grand Master and the author with the most Hugo Awards in the genre's history. In 1960, Anderson published what then seemed like a closed work, *Guardians of Time*, which included four stories featuring a charismatic time patrolman, Manse Everard. These stories had previously appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and w...

This first volume collects stories Poul Anderson wrote over 30 years. The initial tales are short, where the author tries to convey his idea roughly but dynamically. The characters are flat, serving purely as elements to move the plot. Later works are fleshed out with historical facts (though even that isn't too reliable), detailed descriptions, and attempts to build relationships between characters. It still doesn't feel assertive enough for the heroes to come alive, but these aren't the naive,...

This collection gathers nearly all of Poul Anderson's Time Patrol stories, save for one. I'd read four of the first five several times in a Dutch translation of the book *Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Time Patrol*, which ranks among my favorite Anderson works, though after *Orbit Unlimited*. The remaining story from that set, "The Falls of Gibraltar," was new to me. This shortest of tales proves Anderson kept abreast of scientific developments; the discovery of the Zanclian flood dates back ...

Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Time Patrol is one of those works whose influence overshadows the work itself, to the point that people need to be reminded that Poul Anderson was one of the pioneers of this whole notion of alternate history. While Wells was the father of time travel, the way of exploring history and wondering more about the past—what would be different if…—found more echoes in later writers. Although nowadays we see this idea of time travel everywhere, at the time it was novel...

If you're a fan of shows like 'Timeless' or 'Doctor Who,' then Poul Anderson's *Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Time Patrol* is the series' granddaddy. This collection of stories, first published in the '60s with some additions in the '80s, laid the groundwork for time-traveling adventures.Mance Everard, a recruit to the Time Patrol, finds himself part of an organization dedicated to preventing historical alterations that could warp the present. Think of him as a time cop!Free from the constra...

If you find this book in the "Science Fiction" section of your bookstore, move it to the "Detailed Universal History with Time Machines" section. This anthology is a collection of stories about the Time Patrol, an organization that defends history from alterations that could arise and change our past. At first, it's all very nice. You accompany the protagonist as they discover time travel. However, with each new story, time travel becomes a mere excuse to delve into a historical period and expla...

Bordering on kitsch, without quite being it, respectful of the genre but striking in terms of the temporal shifts it explores. Genre: Science Fiction. What it tells us: In Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Time Patrol, originally published as *The Time Patrol* in 1991, we meet Manse Everard, an agent of the Time Patrol. This organization is dedicated to protecting and regulating time travel, ensuring that no influences alter the desired course of history—desired, that is, by the Danelians, the...

This anthology is a must-read for any science fiction lover, especially those with an interest in history. The most remarkable thing about it isn't the protagonist, who's a bit of a stereotype, but its historical foundation. When we read or watch stories about time travel, they often revolve around well-known figures like Julius Caesar or Columbus, and eras like Victorian England or the American Revolutionary War. That's why I was so drawn to Poul Anderson's *Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Ti...

"Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Time Patrol" is a book eagerly anticipated by many science fiction readers, a deluxe edition worthy of our bookshelves. The stories within are of exceptional quality, and it's clear why they've become a benchmark for science fiction. While I don't entirely agree with promoting it by associating it with the TV series that drew inspiration from the book, those who enjoy this genre will find it an essential and entertaining read. Poul Anderson is one of the best ...

This collection of Poul Anderson's *Time Patrol: Classic Tales of the Time Patrol* stories is fantastic. Some reviewers grumble that the main character is a bit bland or that the plots are fairly predictable – and those complaints are fair enough – but that misses the whole point of these stories. These are brilliant "what if" scenarios. What happens when something changes at a crucial moment in history? How can you even identify those pivotal moments? What were those times and places really lik...
