As a longtime fan of Scalzi's Sci-Fi, I can confidently say he has a knack for pulling you into his stories faster than almost any other author. You can always count on an engaging and often amusing narrator, and \"The Shattering Peace\" is no exception. If you're looking for great science fiction book reviews, keep reading. We're thrown right into the action with our protagonist, Gretchen Trujillo, as she addresses some newbies. In fact, the book maintains a relentless pace with only brief pause...

I'm usually first in line for any new John Scalzi book, and the Old Man's War series is the main reason why. I absolutely loved the world he created and the characters who lived in it. It's been a decade since *The End of All Things* came out, so my memory was a little hazy. I probably should have re-read *Zoe's Tale* beforehand. That said, I didn't feel completely lost, and **The Shattering Peace** had enough context to get by without revisiting the previous books. I really liked the main cha...

Lost in another universe

A solid addition to the series. John Scalzi has a real knack for introducing new characters and making you instantly invested in them.

I especially love how he effortlessly switches between intense drama and genuinely funny moments. If you're looking for great science fiction book reviews, check out John Scalzi's *The Shattering Peace*.

SCALZI IS BACK!Finally, after several mediocre books (for what is expected of the author) we are back to reading characters with charisma, absurd situations that are resolved in even more absurd ways, and original plots that mix action with politics like only Uncle Scalzi knows how to do.As a reminder, this is not a book to read without having read the previous ones. It is a seventh installment that is linked above all with books 3 and 4 of the saga, although it also takes an idea that appears i...

3.5 StarsI really enjoyed the first book in the Old Man's War series, so I was pumped to get my hands on the latest one, The Shattering Peace by John Scalzi.Thing is, I missed out on reading and reviewing the books in the middle of the series, and that definitely colored my experience here. The first book stood on its own two feet so well, which almost makes it tougher to judge this sequel fairly. I'd love to dive into the whole series and see how the books evolved from there to The Shattering P...

I'm sorry to say, but "The Shattering Peace" was a disappointment. To start, my general feelings on John Scalzi: I loved the Old Man's War series for the most part, and a lot of his earlier stuff. I enjoyed "The Kaiju Preservation Society" for what it was (which is exactly what Scalzi intended it to be - he called it the book version of a “pop song.”). "Starter Villain" didn’t really work for me - I was just bored with his style, and I decided I wasn’t going to read anything more from him. But ...

The seventh entry in John Scalzi’s “Old Man’s War” series opens a decade after the conclusion of the previous volume, The End of All Things, with the hundreds of species of the known universe enjoying an uneasy peace resulting from a halt to their competing efforts to colonize the galaxy. On the planet Phoenix, Gretchen Trujillo works as a diplomat for the Colonial Union specializing in relations with the Obin, a species with which she enjoys a particular familiarity thanks to her years on the c...

Twenty years ago, a book by a then up-and-coming author was released on January 1, 2005. That book was Old Man’s War (original cover is pictured at left). The story is still stuck in my head all these years later because the premise was just so utterly bonkers. It begins with 75-year-old John Perry fulfilling his earlier enlistment in Earth’s Colonial Defense Forces.Which is where all the fun began – for ‘may you live in interesting times’ values of ‘fun’. First, because Earth’s Colonial Defense...

Oh my gosh, I absolutely loved "The Shattering Peace"! I was so thrilled to hear that John Scalzi decided to return to the Old Man’s War universe and get back to his space opera-style stories, which are definitely my favorite of his. If you're looking for a great space opera, this is it!This story focuses on Gretchen Trujillo, who was Zoe’s best friend in the series. She’s gritty and tough, and her Obin assistant, Ran, is such a fun and endearing character. I really enjoyed their dynamic."The Sh...

Thanks to Tor and NetGalley for the eARC!!!I devoured the entire Old Man's War series a few years back and had no clue John Scalzi was planning a 7th book. So, I was beyond thrilled to see that *The Shattering Peace* was hitting shelves this year. And I'm stoked to say I loved it! I've read a bunch of Scalzi's other stuff, and this was pure, fast-paced, classic Scalzi. We jump right in with Gretchen Trujillo, daughter of Manfred Trujillo, formerly of Roanoke Colony, and best bud of Zoe Boutin Pe...
