Ugh, definitely not one of my favorite Agatha Christie books. While it felt pretty fresh because it's not the formula she usually uses, you can tell it was a pretty experimental book for her.It has two charismatic main characters and a pretty engaging mystery from the first pages. My issue was that some scenes were extremely long and tiring to read. The narrative felt a bit disorganized and it was also confusing to identify all the characters that kept popping up.However, I applaud the historical...

I have to admit, I don't think I've ever actually read *The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery* despite having devoured Agatha Christie's books for the last 50 years (wow, that's a bit of a shock, where did the time go?). That being said, I've caught a few Tommy and Tuppence episodes on TV with different actors in the roles. Even with that, I couldn't recall this particular plot at all. Finding themselves in a financial bind, Tommy and Tuppence realize they don't really have any market...

The first book in the Tommy & Tuppence series, The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery, isn't really a murder mystery. It leans more toward a thriller, packed with secret documents, spies, and shadowy criminal organizations. I've devoured a ton of Agatha Christie's work – way more of her classic whodunits than her thrillers – and I usually find her murder mysteries more satisfying. That's definitely the case here. While The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery was fun, entertain...

This was Agatha Christie's second book and the first to feature Tommy and Tuppence. Unlike later books where they're middle-aged and then old, here they're young and not yet married. It was quite a contrast reading this soon after *Postern of Fate*, Christie's last book and final adventure for the elderly Tommy and Tuppence, where they reminisce about their youth and the past extensively. The action kicks off with the sinking of the passenger ship Lusitania during World War I. As women and chi...

The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery (or, as some might say, *The Secret Foe*)This is the second novel penned by the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie, back in the roaring twenties. And what a ride it is! In a thoroughly enjoyable and suspenseful framework, we witness the very first novel in the *Tommy and Tuppence* series come to light. It's the debut of those two young characters, brimming with youthful recklessness, curiosity, and sharp wit. Tommy and Tuppence, old friends, r...

It was 2 pm on the afternoon of May 7, 1915. The Lusitania had been struck by two torpedoes in succession and was sinking rapidly, while the boats were being launched with all possible speed. The women and children were being lined up awaiting their turn. Some still clung desperately to husbands and fathers; others clutched their children closely to their breasts. One girl stood alone, slightly apart from the rest. She was quite young, not more than eighteen. She did not seem afraid, and her gra...

I've read a lot of Agatha Christie, and I usually love her work. But *The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery* was one of her weaker books, in my opinion. That said, it was only the second book she ever wrote, so she wasn't quite the confident, inspired, and polished writer she'd later become. If you're looking for a classic Agatha Christie mystery, this might not be the best place to start, but it's still an interesting early work from a legendary author. Definitely worth reading as pa...

**The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery** is the first Tommy & Tuppence novel. *Ta-da!* I'm not going to claim that it's *great*, but it was entertaining. And Agatha Christie managed to make me think I ** *KNEW* ** who the hell dunnit, only to jerk the rug out from underneath me...again. You know what was cute, though? All the *snappy* dialogue between the not-quite-yet lovebirds. I mean, it's probably not snappy by today's standards, but back in the day, I'm betting this wa...

IT was 2 p.m. on the afternoon of May 7, 1915. The Lusitania had been struck by two torpedoes in succession and was sinking rapidly, while the boats were being launched with all possible speed. This is still one of the most intriguing Agatha Christie opening lines I have read (another can be found in Murder on the Orient Express, but I'll get to that in a different post). The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery is the first adventure of Miss Prudence Cowley and Lieutenant Thomas Beresfo...

I'm hosting an Agatha Christie Readathon on my blog in April 2018, and we're reading one of her books each week. The first book up, The Secret Adversary: A Tommy & Tuppence Mystery, kicks off the Tommy & Tuppence cozy mystery series she wrote. I've read a bunch of her novels, but hadn't touched this particular series, so I was stoked when it won the poll I set up earlier this year to choose our books. In this caper, Tommy and Tuppence, two somewhat poor 22-year-olds living in London around 1920, ...
