So, you've stumbled upon this review, but haven't dived into the Gaunt's Ghosts series yet? If you're a Warhammer 40k buff, congrats! You've potentially found the best WH40k novels ever written (and that's saying something, considering the Black Library's output). You're in for a treat. But, do yourself a favor and start with *The Founding* omnibus first. Trust me.Now, if you're not already hooked on these books because you know the setting, here's the deal: they're awesome action reads, maybe a...

The nostalgia trip continues. Unlike the first *Gaunt's Ghosts* omnibus, this one doesn't have any extra short stories tucked in, and sadly, the content here isn't Dan Abnett at his absolute finest. *Honour Guard* and *Sabbat Martyr* make a really strong, connected pair, with *Sabbat Martyr* standing out as a highlight in the whole series. However, *Straight Silver*, in particular, is a proper, relentless slog that feels like it ends almost randomly – so much so that even the characters seem sur...

This series is often praised as some of the best writing in the Warhammer 40,000 universe (that's at least how I came to read it). Since there aren't any other negative reviews, I thought I'd share some thoughts while it's still fresh in my mind.
The premise is straightforward. Gaunt – a Richard Sharpe wannabe – leads a regiment of Imperial Guard from battle to battle, hindered by the incompetence (or malice) of his superiors. The writing is serviceable; the combat descriptions are above averag...

This had ceased to be a global matter. Now it was well and truly part of the Crusade. The Saint: A Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus collates four novels that represent an upward slope for the Gaunt's Ghosts series. If you're looking for a solid military science fiction read, this is a great place to start.Characters are settled and have room to develop and interact with their world, the plot, and each other. They're distinct enough with their abilities and limitations to just be "poor bloody infantrymen." ...

I was seriously torn, trying to decide whether to give this four or five stars. But then the ending hit, and... for the love of God, it *had* to be a five. It actually made me cry. Yeah, cry! For real! Dan Abnett definitely knows how to yank at your heartstrings... Now, I absolutely can't wait to dive into *The Saint: A Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus*. Seriously considering this one of my favorite book reviews of the year!

An excellent collection of grimdark military science fiction stories. Truly one of the finest. If you're looking for a great military sci-fi book review, look no further than Dan Abnett's *The Saint: A Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus*. Highly recommended.

The second omnibus chronicles the campaigns of the Tanith First-and-Only Regiment of the Imperial Guard. Orphans from a dead world, they are the Tanith Only, First and Last. Led by the imposing Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, they serve in the Imperium's endless wars against aliens, mutants, and the forces of Chaos. This is absolutely top-notch military science fiction with compelling characters that remind me of people I served with. Each new battlefield is vividly realized, presenting new chall...

While it doesn't quite reach the heights of its predecessor, The Founding, The Saint: A Gaunt's Ghosts Omnibus is still a thoroughly enjoyable read. The Guns of Tanith and sections of Straight Silver really shine, and the intense armored battles in Honour Guard are exceptionally well-crafted.
Sabbat Martyr essentially unfolds as one continuous city fight, punctuated by a brief skirmish at the start and the main engagement about a third of the way in. This makes the book feel a bit shorter than ...

This book hits hard and keeps on hitting. The term 'gritty' gets thrown around a lot these days, but you can practically feel the rough textures and ash-filled air in Dan Abnett's writing. He's especially good at developing the characters just enough so that when—or if—they die (often in the typically senseless ways of war, mentioned almost as an aside), it's genuinely shocking. It won't be for everyone, but if you like a good dose of testosterone with your morning coffee, mixed with a little my...
