I knew this book made a big splash when it first came out in 1978, but the plot and blurbs sounded so campy I never read it. Big mistake! *The Mirror's Reflection* has to be one of the best books I have read in quite a while, and I can see it having appeal for a broad audience. The 'hook' of the story is a strange mirror first brought to San Francisco around 1800 on a ship from somewhere in Asia. A very brief prologue follows the mirror around, which always seems to leave a trail of death and ma...

Marlys Millhiser's *The Mirror's Reflection* is a fascinating and unusual time-travel story where two women, Grandmother Bran and Granddaughter Shay, inadvertently swap lives and bodies through an old, peculiar wedding mirror. It's 1978, and 20-year-old Shay Garrett is about to get married. Her Grandmother Bran, in her 90s, is released from the nursing home to attend the wedding. Shay receives an old mirror as a wedding gift. But when Shay and her Grandmother simultaneously gaze into the mirror...

4.5 StarsThe unsightly antique MIRROR is evil and often deadly, and within its reflection, Marlys Millhiser brings to life an electrifying time-travel story in The Mirror's Reflection....The journey begins in 1978, but quickly reverts to 1900 after Shay Garrett innocently examines the freaky heirloom she receives as a bridal gift and unknowingly causes the entire Gingerbread House to tremble, Shay to faint, and grandmother and granddaughter to trade places right on the eve of their respective we...

**** REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS *****\"Strange\" doesn't even begin to cover it – **The Mirror's Reflection** is like "Back to the Future" meets "Freaky Friday" after a few too many espressos. The core idea? Intriguing. The execution? All over the place. Honestly, trying to wrap my head around the timeline felt like a lost cause until I remembered this gem was published in the '70s. Made me wonder if Marlys Millhiser was, shall we say, creatively inspired during the writing process.Explaining this...

Marlys Millhiser's *The Mirror's Reflection* tells the strange but original tale of four generations of women from 1900 to 1978-79 and how their lives are interwoven and complicated by the machinations of an evil mirror. Shay Garrett and her grandmother Brandy McCabe are switched, mentally and physically, on the eve of their respective wedding days, though the ceremonies are separated by over seven decades. Far from being a comedy spun and packaged by Disney producers (although there are some h...

October, 2021I'm bumping another story to the top of my feed because of October, Halloween, and those Gothic whispers in the air.Update, October, 2014Most of Marlys Millhiser's books are available on Kindle, but you can also read them for free on openlibrary.org! The updated ORIGINAL review, 2017Sadly, I recently learned that Marlys Millhiser passed away in 2017. "The Mirror's Reflection was Mrs. Millhiser's most famous book, so popular with readers that it was one of the most frequently stolen...

This might just be my all-time favorite book. I found it in a pretty unique way. When I was working for an eye doctor in Boulder, Colorado, I met Marlys Millhiser, the author, who was one of our patients. Once I found out she was a published author, I started hunting around in used bookstores for her books and stumbled upon a first edition paperback of "The Mirror's Reflection". I devoured it in just a few days, and I was lucky enough to have Marlys Millhiser sign it for me during a follow-up ap...

This is easily one of my all-time favorite books. I've read "The Mirror's Reflection" by Marlys Millhiser at least a dozen times over the years. I borrowed it from the library ages ago, and the author hooked me within the first dozen pages. I immediately rushed out and bought "The Mirror's Reflection," knowing absolutely nothing about how the story would unfold. I almost NEVER do that! The book is definitely unusual, but uniquely compelling enough to stand out. I devoured "The Mirror's Reflectio...

This is easily one of the best books I’ve ever picked up. I absolutely loved it. The time travel aspect is done brilliantly – the best I've seen. It perfectly balances history and romance, without getting too sappy. If you're looking for a great time travel book, Marlys Millhiser's "The Mirror's Reflection" is a must-read.
