Stop me if you've heard this one before: Ciaphas Cain and the Valhallans drop onto a planet to face a simple threat they should be able to handle, only for something far more ominous and terrifying to crawl out of the woodwork and complicate everything. Add in the usual trope of Cain hoping for the best while adding, "Of course, if I'd known how badly things would go...", Amberley Vail sprinkling in a massive amount of footnotes that don't really add much substance, and Jurgen’s legendary stench...

Commissar Ciaphas Cain and the Valhallan 597th are deployed to Nusquam Fundumentibus to deal with an ork incursion. The campaign promises to be standard, if dangerous, until Cain discovers a far greater threat lurking on the planet—one that views both humans and orks as prey. The redoubtable Ciaphas Cain—the science-fantasy byproduct of an unholy union between Flashman and Blackadder—returns in his eighth novel. Once again, Cain is deployed to a trouble spot that seems manageable, only for compl...

It's a Ciaphas Cain novel, so it's action-packed, fast-paced, and hilarious—pretty much in the same style as every other entry in the series. Our reluctant hero finds himself back on a frozen ice world alongside his less-than-fragrant aide and the trusty Valhallans. As usual, his 'undeserved' heroic reputation forces him to stumble headfirst into the exact kind of danger he spends his entire life trying to avoid. Cain's total obliviousness to his own natural leadership is the core theme of The L...

Imperial Commissars are usually objects of fear and respect to the average Imperial Guardsman. Created in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy, the Commissariat selects only the finest products of the elite Schola Progenium—a training academy found on most large Imperial worlds that accepts the scions of aristocrats and the orphans of the bravest Astra Militarum soldiers. Part military academy, part Marine Corps boot camp, the Schola Progenium trains its charges under the watchful eye of Drill-Abbo...

I honestly didn't find The Last Ditch: A Ciaphas Cain Novel by Sandy Mitchell to be very interesting. The pacing was frustratingly dragged out by far too many footnotes that felt completely unnecessary. On top of that, the humour just didn't land for me—it was a pretty disappointing read for anyone looking for a solid science fiction book review.

The Last Ditch: A Ciaphas Cain Novel is an interesting take on the Warhammer 40K universe, but after reading seven books in the series, I’ve found that most of them follow a very similar pattern. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much new ground broken here; I didn't feel like I learned anything new about the lore or the characters. The only real revelation is that the Tyranids have been in the galaxy far longer than humanity ever suspected. To make matters worse, fan-favorite characters like Amberley...

The Last Ditch: A Ciaphas Cain Novel by Sandy Mitchell is the eighth installment in Black Library's beloved Ciaphas Cain series. For those new to the franchise, it centers on an ostensibly cowardly commissar assigned to a mixed-gender Imperial Guard unit. Set in the gritty Warhammer 40K universe, the narrative follows Commissar Cain as he recounts his life story, detailing his ascent from a lowly junior officer to one of the Imperium's greatest heroes. The running joke, of course, is that Cain c...

A formulaic but undeniably fun Ciaphas Cain adventure—think of it as Blackadder in space. That said, some of these elements are starting to feel a bit like 'Sandy Mitchell boilerplate.'- Cain insists he’s a coward, yet again.- Cain uses 40k gamer slang that absolutely no one else in the universe seems to know.- Cain brings up the smell of unwashed socks and bad breath.- Cain expresses his eternal gratitude for a cup of Tanna tea.- Cain reminds us that while he’s uncomfortable now, things are bou...

If you’re new to the adventures of Ciaphas Cain, you just need to know one thing: he is a self-serving, deeply paranoid, and incredibly skilled liar who is more than happy to put as many bodies as possible between himself and the enemy just to save his own skin. The only reason we find ourselves sympathizing with him is that, while he may be a total coward deep down, he has accidentally cultivated this persona as a legendary "Hero of The Imperium" on the outside.Having noticed that many of his fe...
