Thomas Leo Clancy Jr. was an American novelist and military-political thriller pioneer. Raised in a middle-class Irish-American family, he developed an early fascination with military history. 3.5⭐ A little too heavy on the technical details for my taste. The characters are fantastic, and I'm happy I finally got around to reading the first Jack Ryan novel ever published, The Hunt for Red October. What an impressive debut for Tom Clancy!

When asked if I wanted to buddy read this Tom Clancy classic, I jumped at the chance. While **The Hunt for Red October** was a title I knew, I have to admit I’d never taken the time to read any of Clancy’s work. This was a sensational Cold War thriller, with all the key elements to keep patient readers on the edge of their seats – a real page-turner. When a well-armed Russian nuclear submarine is on its way to the East Coast of the United States, few know that its captain plans to defect. After ...

As someone who's enjoyed the first four movie adaptations of the Jack Ryan books, I'm a little surprised it's taken me this long to finally read one! Maybe bookstores are only stocking them now because of the Amazon TV series... who knows?I've got a couple of these lined up now, and I decided to go with the first published, rather than sticking to chronological order.**The Hunt for Red October** was everything I'd hoped for – gripping and tense. Tom Clancy's detailed descriptions really transpor...

Wow! I honestly didn't expect to like "The Hunt for Red October" by Tom Clancy, not even a little bit. It's so far outside my usual reading preferences, it's hard to explain! But, I'm making an effort to read books from The Great American Read list, so I decided to give it a shot. And I'm so glad I did! It's genuinely thrilling and suspenseful; it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time! I've got to give credit where it's due to The Great American Read. They include books on their list th...

I read *The Hunt for Red October* soon after it was released, and I absolutely loved it; I couldn't put it down. I don't know if it would hold up quite the same way today, though. This Tom Clancy novel was a real page-turner back then!

As the Cold War was winding down, Captain Marko Ramius of the Soviet Navy makes the daring decision to defect, planning to bring the most advanced submarine in the world with him. The Hunt for Red October boasts a revolutionary drive system that renders it virtually silent. This nuclear vessel would be almost undetectable, giving the Soviets a massive advantage over the U.S. and its Allies. But Ramius, a charismatic yet embittered man – a widower of Lithuanian descent – blames the Soviet Union f...

After slogging through Fifty Shades of… well, you know… I needed something…sturdy. The Hunt for Red October seemed like just the ticket. Burly dudes…under the sea…and not a single woman to be found. Hold on a minute! What am I getting myself into? They better not break out into "In the Navy" or "Y.M.C.A." And if anyone offers fashion advice, I'm chucking this book straight into the Atlantic!Wow, what an incredible read. This is definitely number two on my Tom Clancy list, right after Red Storm R...

Tom Clancy's writing style just didn't click with me. Maybe he's a good fit for military tech enthusiasts, but not for me personally.
Clancy is a bestselling author, no doubt. I'm guessing his fans are the type who love diving deep into military details – the kind of folks who enjoy discussing the ins and outs of weaponry and strategy, and like a good story alongside it. He gets incredible access – welcomed onto jets, submarines, destroyers. Admirals and generals brief him, Pentagon officials g...

Everyone always raves about how meticulous Tom Clancy's background research is, but there was a moment in "The Hunt for Red October" that made me raise an eyebrow. The characters are about to run a big program on a military computer, and (being the gambling military types they are) they decide to bet on how long it will take to complete. One of them asks how long the program is – number of lines, or punched cards, or whatever. The other one tells him, and then the first guy makes his estimate. I...

I devoured this book while serving on the USS Eisenhower. It was such a hit with the sailors that I reckon it almost replaced the Basic Military Requirements manual! What truly blew everyone away on the ship was Tom Clancy's spot-on accuracy, both in his research and his storytelling. There wasn't a single moment where we thought, "Nah, that's not how it goes down," which you get all the time in this genre. It's a gripping story, and the meticulous research makes for a fantastic read. For anyone...
