Check out my video review here: https://youtu.be/hfJJDQOrohoPublished in 1979, Douglas Adams' *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* tells the story of Arthur Dent, who's having a seriously awful day. Not only is his house about to be demolished for a new bypass, but the Earth itself is about to be blown up to make way for a galactic highway! Arthur Dent and his pal Ford Prefect get whisked away from Earth just moments before its destruction. The two then travel through the galaxy, meeting all s...

It's not you, it's me... well, maybe it's also you.Unfortunately, *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* just wasn't for me. Some of the humor landed, but overall it was too absurd and too slow to really get going.I wish I loved it as much as everyone else seems to, but it definitely didn't crack my "favorite books of all time" list!UPDATE: I finally put my finger on what bugged me about *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy*. There's this French movie called *Rrrrrrr* (similar humor to Monty Py...

A work that showed humanity its insignificance and that madness is a common, entertaining trait in the universe. One of the greatest milestones of the rare Sci-Fi comedy hybrids, although it loses quality after the first three books. Fantasy seems to lend itself to comedy more than Sci-Fi, and I'm not sure why that is. I'd almost call it Terry Pratchett in space, because of the unique wit, just without the stamina for so many books. The fact that Douglas Adams died of a heart attack in a fitness...

Absurdity at its finest. Arthur Dent is having a bad day. His house is about to be bulldozed to make way for a new bypass. At the local pub, he bumps into his enigmatic friend Ford Prefect. Turns out, Prefect is a galactic hitchhiker who's about to leave Earth, and he's taking Dent with him. Minor inconvenience, right? Except the Earth is about to be demolished to make way for an interstellar highway. Dent quickly realizes several billion people are about to have a *really* bad day. This is the ...

First things first... DON'T PANIC. This review is harmless, well mostly harmless. One thing to keep in mind while reading **The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy** is that it was written in 1979. Considering that, Douglas Adams' vision is astonishing. He presents many forward-thinking elements, starting with the \"book inside the book,\" *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy*, as an electronic book – a very common way to read now. He also mentioned things like \"touch-sensitive screens,\" which ar...

I'm not one of those people who believe that *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* is the greatest book ever written. It doesn't resonate with me on a profound emotional plane, and this particular brand of quirky sci-fi comedy isn't really my cup of tea. That being said, Douglas Adams has penned some of the most brilliant quotes of all time (though not all of these are exclusively from *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy*): "In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of p...

The universe is a joke. Even before I was shown the meaning of life in a dream at 17 (then promptly forgot it because I thought I smelled pancakes), I knew this to be true--and yet, I have always felt a need to search for the truth, that nebulous, ill-treated creature. Douglas Adams has always been, to me, a welcome companion on that journey. Between the search for meaning and the recognition that it's all a joke in poor taste lies Douglas Adams, and, luckily for us, he doesn't seem to mind if y...

What does Kim Jong-Il, a thong-wearing mechanic, and this missing link furry fellow have to do with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? ...you owe it to yourself and your family to find out. With the plethora of wonderful reviews already written for this book by my fellow GRs, I decided instead to provide some helpful, practical advice on why reading this book might benefit my fellow goodreaders. Therefore, as both a life management tool and a safety warning, I have compiled my: Top 5 Reaso...

Another stone-cold classic. If you don't dig *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy*, you've probably got your babel fish jammed in the wrong ear. You're the reason humanity ranks only third in intelligence on this planet, trailing mice and dolphins. So long, and thanks for all the fish! Douglas Adams crafted pure comedic genius here, a must-read for anyone looking for top-tier science fiction book reviews. Seriously, if you haven't read *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* by Douglas Adams, wh...

People either adore Douglas Adams' books or quickly give up on them, in my experience. Personally, I practically worship the words Adams puts on the page and have reread *The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy* so many times I've memorized huge chunks of it. But my wife and father both couldn't get past the first book: she thought it was too silly, and he felt the writing focused more on "the author's personality" than plot and character. Whatever. The first three books in the *Hitchhiker's* series...
