Wow, Tyranids as the main villains two books in a row? Well, at least we saw the return of the Reclaimers; Cain's Space Marine besties. The main problem I have with The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel, despite it being a standard entry in the legend of the heroic commissar, is that it didn't quite meet my expectations. The premise seemed to imply that Cain would be deeply embroiled with the Tau and their messy diplomacy and politics. And while they do act as the heralds of the events defining th...

Are the Tau the good guys? In The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel, Sandy Mitchell dives deep into this age-old Warhammer 40,000 debate with his signature wit and charm. If you're looking for a gripping sci-fi book review that balances grimdark stakes with laugh-out-loud moments, this is the read for you. Mitchell masterfully keeps the tension high while forcing us to question the morality of the galaxy's most enigmatic faction. It’s a must-read for any fan of the Ciaphas Cain series, offering...

Inquisitor Amberley Vail presents, in that lovingly mocking tone she reserves solely for him, the latest installment in the sprawling memoirs of Commissar Ciaphas Cain. All the classic hallmarks of the series are here in The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel. Cain finds himself once again forming reluctant alliances with the same factions and individuals he’s dealt with before, all while facing off against enemies with talons and claws so terrifying that even he doesn't need to exaggerate the h...

The Imperial planet of Quadravidia has come under attack by the Tau. Commissar Ciaphas Cain arrives to advise on the defence of the planet, after several previous encounters with the untrustworthy species. However, the Tau call an unexpected ceasefire in the face of a greater, mutual threat: an incoming Tyranid Hive Fleet. Cain's mission moves from combat to diplomacy as he has to broker a deal between the Tau and Imperium - the latter not known for its interstellar diplomacy - and then help def...

The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel is an absolute blast of a read. It continues the legendary adventures of Commissar Ciaphas Cain, a member of the Officio Prefectus assigned to the Astra Militarum, whose endless brushes with death have earned him the reputation of "Hero of the Imperium."The thing is, Cain is, at best, a reluctant hero. While most Commissars are fanatical and bordering on suicidal, Cain tends to stumble into grave danger, and through a mix of bravery, composure, and sheer du...

Having read every previous installment, I have to say that The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel by Sandy Mitchell was a bit of a letdown. My main gripe is that I went in expecting plenty of Tau action—or at least a consistent presence—but they are barely in 90% of the book.
So, what is this story actually about? Conflict is brewing in the Damocles Gulf, and the Tau are effectively winning a war on the planet where Cain is stationed. After a defeat, the Tau approach Ciaphas to propose a truce ...

The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel is the latest installment in the long-running Ciaphas Cain series. Set in the grimdark Warhammer 40K universe, it follows the exploits of the titular Commissar. While ostensibly a political officer, Ciaphas Cain is a refreshingly cowardly figure who constantly finds himself thrown into horrifically dangerous situations against the Imperium's worst enemies.Managing to survive through a mix of dumb luck and a keenly-honed sense of self-preservation, Cain has ...

The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel is a decent read, though in my opinion, it’s the weakest entry in the Ciaphas Cain series. I should start by saying that I am a massive fan of these books. I believe author Sandy Mitchell has the best grasp of that unique blend of comedy and grimdark violence that defines the Warhammer 40k setting. His novels perfectly combine scathing wit with rock-solid action and adventure. That said, while The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel follows this familiar form...

Commissar Ciaphas Cain is never far away from trouble. No matter how hard he might try to avoid dangerous situations, he always finds himself smack-bang in the middle of the most life-threatening scenarios imaginable, and nowhere is that more clear than in 'The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel'.In this gripping Warhammer 40k book by Sandy Mitchell, we see Cain serving as the Commissariat Liaison to Lord General Zyvan. Arguably, Cain has achieved the perfect position for himself within the army...

The only real downside to The Greater Good: A Ciaphas Cain Novel is that the Tau don't feature nearly as heavily as the cover art might lead you to believe. That said, it’s another fantastic entry in the series by Sandy Mitchell. Plus, we finally get the long-awaited backstory behind that iconic bolter Ciaphas Cain is always brandishing in his propaganda photos. If you're looking for a must-read Warhammer 40k novel that balances humor and action, this book review highly recommends picking it up.
