That’s when I decided the point of travel was not to observe history, but to change it. *The Future of Another Timeline* plunges you into a world where humanity has stumbled upon five mysterious machines scattered across the globe. These machines grant the power to travel backward in time (returning to the present is possible, but not venturing into the future). The mechanics and rules of this time travel are intricate, well-conceived, and refreshingly original. *The Future of Another Timeline...

I honestly can't remember the last time a book left me feeling so conflicted. \"The Future of Another Timeline\" by Annalee Newitz was genuinely amazing! Yet, at times, it was horrific. I'm incredibly glad I read it, but there were moments I wasn't sure I could make it through. It's delightfully hopeful, yet harrowing in a way that reminds me of \"The Handmaid's Tale,\" but on a much grander scale. Ultimately, it evoked a lot of feelings and kept me thoroughly invested, which I guess is a win, b...

You are one. We are many. You cannot make us feel your shame.(I don't even know if this works out of context, but the moment was so powerful, it stuck in my head.)My first 5-star read of the year!I was trying to be stricter with my 5-star ratings this year, because last year I couldn't even compile a best-books-of-the-year list—I was fascinated by *so* many books. But even though there were things in Annalee Newitz's *The Future of Another Timeline* that bugged me (the kinda casual take on murde...

4.5 stars, rounding up. This might just make it onto my Hugo ballot. Seriously fun stuff. I held off on writing a review because I wanted to be clever, to explain the time travel aspects of "The Future of Another Timeline," how Annalee Newitz wove together all those threads of feminist movements, historical figures, and everything else. I mean, the book deserves that level of analysis. But my brain's checked out for vacation, so I'll just share how the book made me feel. And it felt great. Exhila...

I'd give "The Future of Another Timeline" by Annalee Newitz five stars just for the cool research that went into this time-travel novel. Fortunately, there's a lot more going on than just clever interpretations of history. Or rather, alternate histories mixed in among branches of a time war. Ah, but who are the combatants? Is the whole novel about altering history so some faction or another comes out on top? Or is it an intensely personal journey with a lot of emotional punch behind it? Why ca...

There's so much to love about Annalee Newitz's *The Future of Another Timeline*! In fact, the sheer volume of things to appreciate is precisely why, in the end, I wasn't completely satisfied. Let me explain:1) This is a coming-of-age story about a teenager in 1992 navigating a troubled family life, finding solace and strength in her close-knit group of girlfriends, who collectively take justice into their own hands when dealing with rape and sexual harassment.2) This is a time-travel adventure c...

This book definitely has a message, and it's not exactly hiding it. The time travel aspect is pretty cool. Apparently, there are these rocks scattered all over the world that let you travel through time, and humanity's always been in the know. But honestly, that's not the main focus, because Annalee Newitz seems way more interested in pushing a men-versus-women narrative. The characters feel less like real people and more like they're ticking boxes on some kind of 'woke' checklist. The main char...

I received an advance ebook through NetGalley.Punk rock, feminism, LGBTQ+ rights, time travel. A stellar combination in theory, but the execution really disappointed me.*The Future of Another Timeline* tells the story of Tess and Beth in mostly alternating chapters. Tess is a time traveler from the near future desperately trying to counter a misogynistic cult that wants to destroy women's autonomy. Beth is a teen in the early 90s California punk scene navigating unhealthy relationships with frie...

Okay, so *The Future of Another Timeline* by Annalee Newitz is basically a feminist, punk, queer time travel novel. For a lot of readers, I bet that's all they need to hear. The story follows a group of time-traveling cis and trans women, plus some nonbinary characters, who think a rival squad of cis male time travelers are trying to rig history so women never get the vote. Tess, our main character, is dead set on stopping them and building a world with rock-solid reproductive rights. But things...

FULL DISCLOSURE: I beta read Annalee Newitz's *The Future of Another Timeline* at the end of 2018, offering insights into the musical elements central to the plot. I initially beta read *The Future of Another Timeline* to lend my expertise as a popular music historian. However, I found myself completely engrossed in the narrative and its overall message: we have the power to change our timeline. I'm not usually a fan of time travel stories, but I love alternate histories. This one worked because...
