Robert Anson Heinlein was an American science fiction author, aeronautical engineer, and naval officer. Sometimes called the "dean of science fiction writers", he was among the first to emphasize scientific accuracy in his fiction, and was thus a pioneer of the subgenre of hard science fiction. His published works, bot...

Not what I expected. This book wasn't for me.Actually a 2.4This is the most boring time travel book I've ever read. *The Door Into Summer* is a work devoid of action or intrigue and is written in a language similar to what you'd find in a technical manual for an electronic device. What a snooze-fest of a story! The synopsis is clear and direct. *The Door Into Summer* tells the story of an engineer named Dan Davis who makes an innovative invention that would help eliminate the problem of household...

Okay, but this was a good book. And funny. And enjoyable. And just generally great. Whoa, sentence structure almost like in "The Fourth Wing." I'm losing it. I need more books like Robert A. Heinlein's "The Door Into Summer" to pull me out of this reading slump!

I really enjoyed rereading "The Door Into Summer" by Robert A. Heinlein. It's not his best work, nor the most representative of his style, but it's a benchmark for time travel stories. It's not on par with "Starship Troopers" or "Double Star," but it's entertaining and even brings a few laughs.I liked how Heinlein explains the various processes without getting too technical, which fits the type of novel it is. The future he imagined for the year 2000 is fascinating. I wish he'd been right! The ch...

Well, that was lame...and weird. I would have given this a 3-star rating, but that ending was hella strange. Honestly, I couldn’t get into Robert A. Heinlein's *The Door Into Summer* and was mostly bored the whole time. As far as science fiction book reviews go, this one is going to be harsh. Davis takes the “long sleep” in 1970, wakes up 30 years later, and nothing exciting comes of it other than needing to get a job and figure out what happened to his inventions and stocks. There is barely an...

Ad hoc Heinlein Read, May 2025Needed this because my stress levels are through the roof with this never-ending house move. Still a wonderful 4-star read.So enjoyable to read Robert A. Heinlein again after all these years. It's a real mix of time travel and cryogenics. Seriously, you've got to read "The Door Into Summer"!Ad hoc Read, February 2017Okay, with thousands of ratings already, this book’s averaging 4 stars, so my rating isn't going to change anything. I first read "The Door Into Summer"...

I'm a little surprised I don't seem to have reviewed *The Door Into Summer* before. I read this book ages ago, probably first when I was in high school or just after, so the 1960s. I went through a phase of discovering Robert A. Heinlein and devoured everything I could find. Some I didn't care for, some I liked, and some I absolutely loved. Many consider *The Door Into Summer* one of his "teen reads," but that's debatable due to some of the subject matter. Heinlein was very much a libertarian a...

I didn't read this book with the intention of writing a review, so please excuse me if I don't go into great detail. Let me just summarize "the feel" of the book...It isn't often that I read a book that makes me smile the entire time I'm reading it; but *The Door Into Summer* by Robert A. Heinlein is one of them. From the hilarious anachronisms of the 1950's Futurist to the brilliant side-kick cat, Pete. (Cat lovers will appreciate this book on a completely different level than other readers). I...

A thoroughly enjoyable sci-fi story from a Grandmaster of the genre. The novel's protagonist, Daniel B. Davis, feels like a prototype for characters like Hugh Farnham and even Lazarus Long, although Long actually appeared earlier in 1941's *Methuselah's Children*. Davis (and others in Heinlein's work) are essentially thinly veiled versions of Heinlein himself: fiercely individualistic, libertarian, technically skilled, hardworking yet innovative, resourceful, quick-witted, and possessing a libi...

I liked it, but someone suggested I shouldn't give four stars to every single book I enjoy, so here goes for Heinlein. I really had no issues with "The Door Into Summer", and Heinlein is still one of my favorite SF masters after reading it.I enjoy books that feature engineers as protagonists, and here we have one proto-geek singlehandedly inventing robotics in the 50's and failing rather spectacularly in the human relations department. Later on, there's some time travel thrown in and some cryoge...

Utterly creepy, and not in a good way. It's a time travel tale, and I'll forgive a lot for an entertaining time travel story. But "entertaining" and "time travel" are all that *The Door Into Summer* has going for it. I haven't read a lot of Robert A. Heinlein, but this didn't show me at all why he's got so many fans. I was hoping for a great sci-fi book review, but was left disappointed. The writing style is fine, but he goes wrong in a few key ways with the story. [SPOILERS] For one, he wrote t...
