I’m a massive fan of the Lost Fleet series featuring Blackjack Geary—it’s my ultimate go-to comfort read. Tarnished Knight by Jack Campbell, however, is a completely different beast, set in a grittier world filled with those evil, conniving, backstabbing Syndics. It’s a bit like switching from a series about Captain Picard or Kirk to one focused entirely on the Romulans. General Drakon and President Iceni are the least repellent of the bunch, though; they’re determined to free their home system ...

I’m genuinely invested in these two main characters and I’m dying to find out what happens to them next. Jack Campbell is masterful at showing us that these aren't your typical, squeaky-clean heroes. They’ve been through the ringer, made some questionable choices, and let's be honest—they’re still making them. But beneath the surface, I get the distinct feeling they’re looking for redemption. If you are looking for a gripping sci-fi book review, Tarnished Knight by Jack Campbell is a must-read. ...

Tarnished Knight by Jack Campbell works perfectly as a spin-off expansion to the Lost Fleet series, as it allows for a deep dive into the character perspectives of the original series' former antagonists. The fast-paced, engaging action sequences keep the momentum going throughout the story. However, if you are looking for a new sci-fi book review, be aware that this title requires far too much prior knowledge to be enjoyed as a stand-alone read. Chronologically, the events of Tarnished Knight t...

Confession time: I find it much easier to connect with Artur Drakon and Gwen Iceni than I ever did with John Geary. They are far less idealistic, and honestly, it’s just simpler for me to get fully immersed in their journey. Perfect, flawless heroes like Geary always make my teeth ache a little. If you are looking for a gritty sci-fi space opera, Jack Campbell’s Tarnished Knight delivers a compelling narrative that feels refreshingly grounded. It’s a must-read for fans of military science fictio...

Unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to finish this. I really enjoyed The Lost Fleet, but when I returned to dive into this series, everything just felt a bit... basic. Almost every character felt like a carbon copy of the last; they acted in such predictable ways and their dialogue was incredibly bland. I just couldn't stand it.To be fair, I had just finished reading an intricate mystery-political-military thriller, so this probably wasn't the best choice for a follow-up read. I started The W...

Like many fans of Jack Campbell's previous work, I held off on starting this series. I was hesitant because I wasn't sure I wanted to spend time reading a story centered on Syndicate CEOs. It really speaks to the quality of his earlier series that I had developed such a deep hatred for the Syndicate; the idea of reading from their perspective was a tough sell. Well, as a further testament to Mr. Campbell's incredible writing, this book actually made me appreciate these characters—even as former ...

I’m giving four stars to Tarnished Knight, and it’s well-earned. While it definitely took a bit of time to get through, the balance between high-stakes action and solid character development made it a really enjoyable sci-fi read. I absolutely loved the intellectual game of chess playing out between General Drakon and President Iceni. Jack Campbell has hooked me—I’m definitely sticking with this series! As a spin-off of his popular Lost Fleet novels, Jack Campbell takes his established universe in a fresh direction with the first entry in this new series, Tarnished Knight. By shifting the focus to the previously established antagonists, he successfully humanizes what once felt like a monolithic, cartoonish enemy force. There is a distinct shift in tone with this volume, which offers a welcome change of pace. While the Black Jack books primarily centered on themes of leadership and responsibilit...

In this exciting spinoff from his acclaimed Lost Fleet series, Jack Campbell shifts his focus to a pair of former Syndicate CEOs—the dystopian corporate empire that served as the primary antagonists in his previous books. These leaders cut ties with their old masters and attempt a revolution, driven more by pragmatism than idealism, as they work to break free from the Syndicate’s grip and establish their own independent star system. What makes Tarnished Knight so fascinating is that it functions...

As opening lines go, this one didn't just pique my interest—it hooked me instantly and reeled me in. Usually, it takes me a few dozen pages to settle into a new book and feel comfortable in its world, but Tarnished Knight had me strapped in for the wild ride right ...
