"Love isn't like a faucet you can just turn on and off."I wasn't at all familiar with the political history of Argentina or the Abuelas of Plaza De Mayo, a group of total badasses—grandmothers who dedicated their lives to finding stolen babies taken from detained pregnant women during Argentina's bloody military dictatorship. The courage and persistence of these women in the face of danger and terrible odds is something I'll never forget. *Stolen Children of Argentina: The Abuelas' Fight for Just...

This book absolutely shreds your heart, laying bare the profound bonds of family against the backdrop of unspeakable evil wielded by those in power. It follows one family's journey from their arrival in Argentina all the way to 2025. What an unbelievably heartbreaking history! It's a brutal story to read, unimaginable to have lived through.Haley Cohen Gilliland masterfully chronicles the struggle of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, giving it a deeply personal touch. I listened to "Stolen Children of Argentina: The Abuelas' Fight for Justice" with Simon on audiobook, and it was absolutely grueling. The sheer cruelty is stunning. People were snatched right off the streets, families were torn to shreds, and the torture… unspeakable. The courage of the grandmothers, the Abuelas, who fought tirelessly to find their children and grandchildren was just amazing. They were so resourceful and completely unstoppable, even when facing such a brutal regime. This is a mu...

I've been letting "Stolen Children of Argentina: The Abuelas' Fight for Justice" marinate for a few days now, and it's still so hard to put into words how heartbreaking it was. This book by Haley Cohen Gilliland is a powerful read.I think this is one of those books everyone should read at some point, preferably sooner rather than later. And the fact that Yugoslavia was mentioned was the icing on the cake.We STILL have people here whose babies were stolen and who've been tirelessly searching for ...

An extraordinary and important book, *Stolen Children of Argentina: The Abuelas' Fight for Justice* examines Argentina's "Disappeared" through the eyes of mothers whose children were stolen and executed by the government. These women dedicated their lives to finding the children of those children, born and given away like prizes after their mothers were tortured and killed. This is a massive story, involving 20,000 or more people murdered by the regime during the Dirty War. Thousands of those we...

This is a truly excellent book about the Abuelas – the grandmothers of the 'disappeared' children in Argentina – and their relentless quest for justice and truth. During the 1960s and 70s, thousands of young Argentinian men and women who opposed the ruling regime were arrested and simply vanished. Many were young couples excitedly anticipating the birth of their children. Once these babies were born in prison, their parents were murdered, and the newborns were given away. Sometimes, the child wa...

Pre-Read Notes: Honestly, the title and subtitle of this one grabbed me right away. I'm drawn to this kind of history, where people fight fiercely for what they believe in."“If you keep searching for Néstor, I’m leaving.” Azucena stared at him evenly, then replied, “Want me to pack your suitcase?”" p114 Final Review (thoughts & recs) Some historical accounts require naming and discussing dozens, even hundreds, of individuals. Others require very few, if any, names. This book, Stolen Children...

Haley Cohen Gilliland's *Stolen Children of Argentina: The Abuelas' Fight for Justice* is an absolute feat of journalism and painstaking research. You can just feel the immense care and respect that permeated every step of the process and every last detail. I deeply appreciated the sheer depth of this book and the staggering amount of history it manages to pack in. It did feel a little lengthy at times, and there were moments I wished Gilliland would tighten things up a bit, but honestly, that d...

I like my books messy. Not the writing, obviously, but the underlying issues that the story brings up organically. There's something about a narrative that makes you wonder, "Well, what would I have done? What's the right answer here?" An exceptional example of this is *Stolen Children of Argentina: The Abuelas' Fight for Justice* by Haley Cohen Gilliland. I still don't know what I would have done, and I definitely don't have the right answer.Gilliland examines Argentina from the 1970s to today....

Wow, *Stolen Children of Argentina: The Abuelas' Fight for Justice* is absolutely astounding. I feel like I'm walking right alongside these Abuelas as they fight to save their little loved ones, and it's just heartbreaking. The sheer tenacity of these women is incredible!I really enjoy learning about history, especially when it reads almost like a novel. This doesn't quite have that full novelistic feel, but the story of the people who disappeared in Argentina, and the Abuelas who were driven to...
