Primeval Waters by William Burke is an epic thrill ride that takes you deep into the heart of the Amazon. The plot is masterfully crafted, delivering non-stop suspense that keeps you hooked from the very first page to the last. The characters are so well-developed that I genuinely couldn't find a single one I didn't enjoy. I particularly loved the focus Burke placed on the dynamics and relationships between the cast. With dangers lurking around every corner, this is a must-read adventure. I high...

3.5 stars. Please note, that is a GOOD rating. I actually really liked this book. I’ve added it to my personal shelf for "great airport reads." Yes, it relies on some familiar tropes, but I honestly had a blast with it. It has a vibe that feels a bit like the early thrillers by Preston & Child. I enjoyed the main characters and loved the concepts; it’s written in a classic, Crichton-esque style. I can easily picture this being adapted into a solid movie or a gripping audiobook. I’ll definitely...

When I first picked up Primeval Waters by William Burke, I was pretty sure I knew exactly what to expect: savage piranhas stripping unsuspecting victims to the bone. While the book eventually gets there, the piranhas don’t actually make an entrance until the 40% mark. Instead, you're treated to a terrifying parade of prehistoric man-eaters, including swarms of driver ants, four-foot-long centipedes, mammoth-sized snakes that make anacondas look tame, and 12-foot-long eels with enough voltage to ...

*Trigger Warning: Animal deathWelp. This was an odd one for me. It checked SO many boxes, too! Killer sea life, creature features, ancient aliens, the Amazon river—you name it. But for some reason, I just couldn't get enthusiastic about Primeval Waters by William Burke. :/ I mean… I enjoyed it. It was alright, but that was it… just… alright. I never really felt invested in the characters or the overall story. For me, the narrator felt like a bad match for this book. The characters were in their 3...

Not for me. If you’re the type of reader who loves non-stop action—that relentless, bumper-car style of constant cliffhangers—then you might enjoy Primeval Waters by William Burke. I’m usually a fan of high-stakes danger, but I also prefer a story that takes the time to flesh out its main characters and build meaningful relationships, rather than just stringing together one chaotic event after another. I ended up giving up on the book and stopped reading when Faye went overboard; it was just one...

William Burke has truly brought his characters to life and given them real purpose. The world he has crafted is so vivid that it makes you feel like you are standing right there alongside them. I absolutely loved the family dynamic and the protagonist’s fierce drive to protect his daughter. Primeval Waters goes beyond the typical horror novel; while it is undeniably gritty and dark with plenty of thrills, it also places a beautiful focus on personal relationships. With an energetic plot and stea...

Unexpectedly Good!

I was just expecting a fun, lighthearted creature feature, and while Primeval Waters by William Burke definitely delivers on the monster thrills, there is so much more depth to the storytelling here than I anticipated. I genuinely loved this book; it was such a fantastic surprise and a must-read for anyone looking for a gripping horror novel.

Horror in the AmazonYou’re instantly swept away by the author’s vivid imagination. William Burke does a fantastic job with his descriptions, making it easy to see exactly what the characters are witnessing. Primeval Waters strikes a perfect balance—there’s just enough horror involving the mutated animals to keep you on edge without ever overshadowing the actual plot. It has a great pace and is a genuinely gripping read. If you’re looking for a top-tier creature feature book review, this is a mus...

I first came across this talented author when I read “Scorpius Rex.” Well, I should say, when I first saw the incredible cover of “Scorpius Rex,” and knew I absolutely had to read it. I can still recall every detail of those engineers out in the African desert as they uncovered a colony of huge, ten-foot prehistoric scorpions that proceeded to unleash hell on earth. I mean, come on… after hearing just that, you know you have to get online and buy that William Burke book as fast as humanly possib...
