Perilous Shield by Jack Campbell gets better as it goes along, but the final pages really fall flat. I would have given it a 4-star rating, but because of that ending, it’s a 3.5. A must-read for fans looking for a solid sci-fi book review.

Perilous Shield continues the gripping adventures of General Dracon and President Iceni as they attempt the grueling task of building a functioning democracy from a population of reluctant, scheming, and often murderous citizens. I really enjoyed the first book, even if it was difficult to find a character to truly root for, but I enjoyed this sequel even more. The addition of Captain Bradamont, an Alliance officer who brings a much-needed sense of morality to the Syndic world, adds a fantastic ...

Perilous Shield keeps up the same breakneck action and intensity we saw in the first book of the series, Tarnished Knight, while also delivering some truly satisfying character growth. If you’re new to the series, you might feel a bit lost without the backstory, but for longtime fans, this book is an absolute must-read that hits all the right marks. If you're looking for your next gripping sci-fi book review, Jack Campbell has certainly delivered another stellar entry in this saga.

To read more reviews in this series and others, check out keikii eats books!89 points, 4 ½ stars! The Midway Star System has successfully gained its independence, shaking off Syndicate forces. But freedom doesn't mean safety. The Enigma fleet has arrived, and they are a threat far beyond what Midway can handle alone. When the Syndicate returns to reclaim the system, an impossible situation spirals into a hopeless one. They have an ace up their sleeve in 'Black Jack' Geary, who delivers just as th...

The Lost Stars series is a spin-off of The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier, focusing on the leaders of the Midway Star System—a former Syndicate world struggling to build a new government from the ashes of a repressive regime. The first two books run concurrently with events in one of the later Beyond the Frontier novels, but the story is told entirely from the perspective of Midway's leadership. I’ve always enjoyed The Lost Fleet books, but I’m pleasantly surprised to find that I’m enjoying thi...

Perilous Shield is hands down the best book I've read by Jack Campbell. The tension and suspense are expertly maintained throughout, and the human drama feels incredibly authentic and compelling. I am absolutely loving The Lost Stars series.

Overall rating: 4.5/5.0 stars.

I really enjoy how Jack Campbell captures the sheer difficulty of understanding free thinking for people who have never experienced it before. In Perilous Shield, motives always seem to be obscured, and every action or word is viewed as a calculated pattern masking hidden agendas. If you are looking for a gripping sci-fi novel review, this book is a must-read for fans of complex character dynamics and political intrigue.

Jack Campbell has delivered another solid entry in The Lost Fleet universe. Perilous Shield is the second installment in the spin-off series, The Lost Stars, set within the expansive galaxy established by the original Lost Fleet novels. This series follows a syndicate star system attempting to forge its own path after the Syndicate Worlds began to crumble.Having read every entry in The Lost Fleet, Beyond The Frontier, and The Lost Stars, I’ve enjoyed the entire saga. Campbell’s writing remains s...

Yeah, I’ve read it. I’ve been along for the ride starting all the way back with Dauntless, and I even backtracked to the Stark universe, but as much as I hate to admit it, Perilous Shield by Jack Campbell is his best work to date. The writing has improved even more. I originally dove into The Lost Fleet series because of the realism in his space battles and the metaphor of the human condition, but that series has developed some narrative weaknesses that are becoming pretty apparent. The Lost Sta...

You know what I find fascinating about this story? Apart from pretty much everything else in it, that is. I love watching Artur and Iceni flail about trying to express emotion. It's hilarious to me! They've lived their whole lives as top dogs in a system that only lets you get to that level by showing zero weakness and repressing any kind of remorse or compassion, so they have absolutely no idea what they're doing, and I love it! They're professionals with the power to level planets, but they ha...
