Of all the books by Poul Anderson I’ve read so far, I have to say Operation Chaos is my least favorite. It’s not that I disliked it, but it just didn't leave the lasting impression I was hoping for. The story starts out with a really cool premise: a world that looks just like ours, but where magic has taken the place of technology. It does a great job of showing how that would completely change the nature of warfare. However, the book eventually loses sight of that unique angle and veers off int...

Operation Chaos is exactly what you would expect from most of Poul Anderson's work—thought-provoking yet incredibly fun. It is packed with characters from European folklore, the epic scale of traditional space opera, the flair of American fantasy, and a wealth of fascinating analogies to history, the Bible, and real-world figures. The fact that the 'leader' of the demons is a moustached man with a strange armband who speaks with a strong Germanic accent—in an alternate future where Nazi Germany ...

I read Operation Chaos by Poul Anderson back in the 70s, and for years—even without remembering the title—I’ve held it up as the gold standard for a deft mingling of science and fantasy. It’s a brilliant read where the magic actually follows consistent, "scientific" rules, such as the conservation of mass and energy. If you are looking for a classic sci-fi fantasy book review that highlights creative world-building, this is a must-read.

I’ve heard other reviewers claim that Poul Anderson is a brilliant ideas man, even if his storytelling sometimes falls short. Personally, I’ve always been impressed by his narrative skills, but I can wholeheartedly agree with that first point: he consistently comes up with original, deeply thought-out science fiction and fantasy concepts. Operation Chaos was first published in 1971, but it was compiled from short stories that originally appeared in the fifties and sixties. Anderson introduces a ...

I really love the premise of Operation Chaos by Poul Anderson. The story is framed as a desperate transmission broadcast across alternate realities, serving as a warning to anyone out there listening. The narrator touches on things he likely shares with the reader—but you’ll want to stick with it even if you already know how steam boilers work or who actually won World War II, because in this world, having too much information is definitely better than having too little. The narrative dives into ...

Their child has been kidnapped by a demon from a universe with highly non-Euclidean geometry, so they summon up the spirits of Riemann, Bolyai, and Lobachevsky to assist them and then head off through the transdimensional portal to get her back. As one does. If you are looking for a wild sci-fi adventure, Operation Chaos by Poul Anderson is an absolute must-read that blends math, magic, and mayhem in the best way possible. This classic genre-bending novel is a fantastic pick for anyone hunting f...

I’ve kept a copy of Operation Chaos by Poul Anderson on my bookshelf since the early seventies, and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve happily reread it. It’s essentially four interconnected stories woven together with interludes to form an episodic novel. It’s a total blast—set in a world where magic became a formal science after 1900. Up until that point, it shares history with our own world, but then it takes a sharp, fascinating turn. The book perfectly captures the social attitudes of t...

Years before reading this book, Barb and I had enjoyed Poul Anderson's The High Crusade, and I had already dipped into a few of his short stories. But Operation Chaos wasn't even on my radar, and I likely never would have discovered it if not for a recommendation from a Goodreads friend back when I was new to the site. I’ve forgotten who that benefactor was, but based on that suggestion, I added it to my wishlist and eventually snagged a copy. Last month, while searching for a standalone read fo...

SF Grand Master Poul Anderson is at his idea-cultivating, world-germinating, yarn-spinning best here... you should just ignore the somewhat tepid, plywood character development. This book is head, shoulders, and naughty bits above any other Anderson effort for pure, synapse-satisfying, brain-boggling creativity. It’s a warehouse full of "holy shit that's cool" ideas that somehow manage to fit together into a phantasmagoric, adrenaline-fueled funhouse of awesome. Operation Chaos is a fix-up novel...

Operation Chaos by Poul Anderson is easily one of my favorite fantasy books of all time. Compiled from a series of short stories, Anderson masterfully blends magic and technology in ways I had never even considered before picking this up. The setup in the introduction, which dives into the alternate history of the world, is absolutely priceless. Of course, the story wouldn't be half as good without its fantastic characters, especially our werewolf protagonist and the truly unforgettable witch, G...
