Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell is a short, tightly-written mystery that offers some fascinating insights into Navajo culture. I was quite enthusiastic at first, but by the end, a fair number of inconsistencies and moments that just didn't ring true—I’m still wondering why 'unconvincity' isn't a word yet!—started to pop up. To top it off, the ending felt far too abrupt for my taste. Despite these pacing issues, this is still a solid addition to the mystery genre, and I might just find myself ...

I spent some time living on a reservation when I was a child while my dad worked as a doctor for the Indian Health Service. I have a deep love for the Southwest, and I find Native American culture both fascinating and heart-wrenching in the way it exists on reservations today. Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell is incredibly well-written; it’s obvious that the author has spent significant time with the Navajo people and views many of them as friends. The characters were wonderful, and the myster...

I don't usually reach for crime mysteries, but I picked up Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell for a seasonal reading challenge. As the first installment in the Navajo Nation series, it sets the stage with a gripping premise: the murder of a Bureau of Indian Affairs investigator. When the FBI swoops in and takes control of the investigation, Thomas Begay—a Navajo man living on the nearby reservation—is arrested, only to make a daring escape. His friend, the lawyer Charlie Yazzie, is convinced of ...

Navajo Autumn is the first of a series set in the Four Corners region of the American Southwest. I’ve been hunting for a mystery series set in this region that really clicks, and R. Allen Chappell has finally satisfied that longing. If you’re a fan of Craig Johnson or Tony Hillerman, you’ll likely love this series. What all three authors share is a genuine love for the landscape they write about, coupled with well-developed characters and truly intriguing plots. While Johnson’s Longmire books are...

As I started reading Navajo Autumn, I felt a strong kinship to the late, great Tony Hillerman. He was truly one of New Mexico’s finest, leaving behind a massive legacy—much like his daughter Anne is doing now by continuing his work. R. Allen Chappell captures that same Hillerman-esque spirit, a thought that stayed with me throughout the entire book. Following the well-deserved success of Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn and Chee mysteries, plenty of authors rushed to find their footing in this niche. ...

Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell is a police procedural set across the vast Navajo reservation, weaving together a tale of murder and corruption involving the tribal council, the BIA, and the FBI. The plot centers on a Sioux man found dead under a bridge, discovered alongside a drunken Navajo man. While the premise is intriguing, the book feels surprisingly dated for a recent release—it still uses terms like "Anasazi," which are no longer preferred. The writing feels a bit derivative; Tony Hil...

If you are a fan of Tony Hillerman, you will absolutely love R. Allen Chappell's take on the American Southwest. I have always been a huge fan of Hillerman’s work; in fact, I spent last year rereading his entire Navajo series in order, and they hold up just as well as I remembered. Navajo Autumn is Chappell's first foray into this genre, and his gift for storytelling truly brings the narrative to life. Furthermore, his deep understanding of local flavor and his talent for character development l...

Set against the backdrop of the Navajo Reservation, Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell offers a fascinating deep dive into the local culture. While the mystery itself is just 'okay'—the culprit and the conclusion felt fairly predictable from the start—the atmospheric setting really shines. I found myself easily visualizing the landscape, especially since I've personally visited all the locations described. However, the reading experience was hampered by some glaring editing issues, including per...

Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell is the first installment in a gripping new mystery series set against the backdrop of New Mexico. The story follows Charlie, a Navajo lawyer striving to succeed in a world dominated by white culture. He finds himself on the edge of a high-stakes investigation: the murder of a prominent official within the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Charlie is uniquely positioned to track down the prime suspect, Thomas Begay, an old school acquaintance who struggles with heavy dr...

I’m a huge fan of Tony Hillerman, and I honestly worried that the Navajo Nation mystery genre had died along with him. I’m thrilled to say I was wrong! I absolutely loved Navajo Autumn by R. Allen Chappell. While it’s tempting to call him the next Hillerman, Chappell brings a unique style and a depth of knowledge that is entirely his own. He understands the Navajo culture on such a profound level—a rare find in modern crime fiction. You’ll find yourself truly invested in the main characters like...
