Well, it rhymes with *To Turn the Tide*, but that's a better book. On the other hand, *Lest Darkness Fall and To Bring the Light* is great, especially considering it was written in 1939. Both books are worth a read for sci-fi fans and anyone interested in speculative fiction. The characters and story are decent, but the writing style is a bit clunky. As for *To Bring the Light*, while it offers a unique perspective on time travel, it ultimately gets a 'Meh!' from me. If you're looking for good t...

It's a curious choice by Urania to combine two stories by different authors, written 50 years apart, into a single volume. It's understandable, given the common thread of time travel (unwillingly undertaken by the protagonists) and the setting at the twilight and dawn, respectively, of Roman civilization.L. Sprague de Camp's story, *Lest Darkness Fall and To Bring the Light*, begins with an American scholar who, while visiting the Forum in Fascist Rome, finds himself projected back to 6th-century...

Written in a fluid style, but the subject matter just didn't resonate with me. I got a little bored, to be honest. Others might definitely enjoy L. Sprague de Camp's *Lest Darkness Fall and To Bring the Light*, though. If you're into alternate history or time travel stories, it could be right up your alley. Check out this book review to decide if *Lest Darkness Fall and To Bring the Light* is for you!

October 14th. It's tough to judge a book written in 1939 that essentially invented a new genre: time travel alternate history. Not being a huge history person, and definitely not a fan of military history, the plot of "Lest Darkness Fall and To Bring the Light" felt a little silly to me. Still, it cleared the path for so many other cool stories, so I can appreciate its role in sparking a whole new kind of fiction. The novella "To Bring the Light", also by L. Sprague de Camp, was clearly inspired...

Think *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court* but with grown-ups in Rome! *Lest Darkness Fall and To Bring the Light* by L. Sprague de Camp is an excellent story. If you're looking for captivating historical fiction, this is it!

This edition packages L. Sprague de Camp's wonderful classic novel, *Lest Darkness Fall and To Bring the Light*, with a very good novella by David Drake. They make for a thought-provoking pairing, and Drake's story complements de Camp's perfectly. It's an excellent read, highly recommended for fans of time travel fiction and alternate history novels. If you're looking for compelling historical fantasy books, start here!

OVERALL RATING: 3.5
This volume includes a novel and a long short story centered on the unexpected time travel of their respective protagonists.
Fun to read, but nothing more: the novel, **Lest Darkness Fall**, is too frantic and lacks attention to detail, in my opinion. As for the second, **To Bring the Light** by L. Sprague de Camp, I found the protagonist incredibly irritating. Looking for some fun time travel books? These might fit the bill, but don't expect masterpieces.

L. Sprague de Camp's *Lest Darkness Fall* is a lengthy but deeply intriguing story. Unlike Mark Twain's *A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court*, the historical reconstruction here is authentic and top-notch. An American historian is struck by lightning in front of the Pantheon in Rome and finds himself thrown back in time to the era of the Byzantine invasion of Ostrogothic Italy. The plot and conclusion are excellent. *To Bring the Light* by Drake feels like an homage to de Camp's earlier...

The first book, *Lest Darkness Fall*, is a stone-cold classic for a reason. It's a quintessential time-travel story, diving deep into historical alterations and their ripple effects. A must-read for fans of historical fiction and alternate history!
