Bring on the tomatoes! This is going to be an unpopular review……I just don’t understand the hype surrounding this book, "Holes" by Louis Sachar. At the premise of Holes, a group of boys are charged with digging 5 feet by 5 feet holes and to let someone in charge know if they find anything “interesting.” Hmm…doesn’t that sound like buried treasure? Aren’t they going to find something? Come on and get there already! The repetition was nauseating and sent me over the mooooooooonnnnnn! Maybe I will j...

Louis Sachar's *Holes* will forever be a childhood favorite. It's one of those books that just sticks with you, you know? A truly great read, and one I'd recommend for anyone looking for a good book for young readers.

3.75 stars Okay, let's talk about *Holes* by Louis Sachar. This book… it’s one of those that sticks with you. It’s not a perfect five-star read, but it’s got this weird, compelling magic. Sachar weaves together these seemingly disparate storylines – Stanley Yelnats and his family curse, Zero and his quiet strength, the legend of Kissin' Kate Barlow – and somehow makes it all click. The plot is intricate, maybe a little too intricate at times, requiring you to really pay attention to keep all ...

This book, Holes, is an absolute blast! I used to clip book reviews from magazines, and recently, while cleaning, I stumbled upon an old clipping about Louis Sachar's Holes and thought, "Mmm... let's give this a read." The timing couldn't have been better. I was going through an intensely challenging period of hard work and high pressure at the office, and Holes made me look forward to reading, even if it was just a few pages when I got home. It's a quirky, funny story about a boy named Stanley ...

I knew someone who lost everything when her father started digging holes. See, her dad was a treasure hunter. And to be a treasure hunter, you're supposed to be well-equipped and have a good crew. You also need a reliable map and a ton of time. Plus, you need a lot of money to get all that stuff. Unfortunately, my friend's father only had a fake map, swindlers for company, and equipment that was worthless when you're digging in the wrong place. Little by little, my friend's dad used up all their...

I'm not exactly sure when it happened, but it seems I'm no longer the coolest person in my daughter's eyes. I could understand if her issues with me were about current fashion or the 'in' things to do with friends, but books? BOOKS?!? Oh, the pain!I don't say anything about the girly, preteen stuff she loves to read (after all, I occasionally read girly grownup stuff), and I recommend a wide range of books, keeping in mind she doesn't share my love for sci-fi/fantasy. She's a voracious reader, h...

Funny story: I'm trying to shelve *Holes* by Louis Sachar, and can't remember if it had been banned (but I thought it had - Google confirmed). At the same time, my friend Allison and I are chatting on Google Chat, and she starts ranting about how ridiculous book banning is (an opinion with which I agree wholeheartedly). Anyway, the conversation went like this: me: Is *Holes* a banned book? I can't rememberallison: dunno... the whole concept of banned books is stupid. I mean, you could find a rea...

One of the best books ever written. Honestly, *Holes* by Louis Sachar just gets better every single time you read it!

I read it aloud to my kids who are 7, 10, and 14, and they were absolutely hooked! They couldn't get enough of *Holes*! If you're looking for amazing children's book reviews, look no further.

Okay, *Holes* by Louis Sachar is seriously one of my all-time favorite books. The whole thing is just so darn clever! Sachar's writing style is straightforward, but never dull. Every single character is amazingly well-developed and totally believable. I especially love how the present-day storyline and the historical narrative weave together so perfectly, tying everything up neatly at the end. And, bonus, the movie adaptation of *Holes* is actually really good too! I wholeheartedly recommend thi...
