I am slowly learning more about the warring factions and their distinct cultures in Fearless by Jack Campbell, and I really hope that trend continues. While the characters could use a bit more depth, I’m genuinely enjoying the world-building; I expect that these personalities will be fleshed out more as the series progresses. Overall, this is such a binge-worthy series. It’s light, fast-paced, and an incredibly easy read. If you are looking for your next great sci-fi book review, this is a fanta...

For those who need to know, Fearless by Jack Campbell is completely free from expletives, blasphemy, violence, and smut. I still think that is quite an impressive feat, as I don't recall ever reading military sci-fi without at least one of those elements. If you are looking for a clean, compelling space opera, this is a must-read. The protagonist, Captain John Geary, has his hands full trying to get the fleet back to Alliance space while dodging the Syndic forces hot on their trail. As if that’...

Yeah, I’m officially done with this series. Fearless by Jack Campbell was somewhat boring but passable up until about the halfway mark, at which point John Geary started acting all humble toward Madam Co-President. It’s particularly jarring considering there isn't a shred of chemistry between them, nor any real romantic tension to speak of. If you’re looking for a solid space opera book review, this entry just doesn't hit the mark.

3.7⭐ Rounded UpUpdated 02/15/22 Review AddedThis is the second installment in Jack Campbell’s original Lost Fleet series, back before the timeline got bogged down with endless sequels, prequels, and spin-offs. In Fearless, our hero, 'Black Jack' Geary, battles threats from outside, inside, and beyond the stars to bring the fleet closer to home—all while managing to find time for romance, or at least a bit of passion, with the enigmatic politician Victoria Rione. It’s a cut above much of the spac...

I enjoyed Fearless by Jack Campbell so much! It is truly exciting and packed with action. First, poor Geary (as I've taken to calling him) rescues some prisoners of war, including Captain Falco—a gloryhound who thinks he’s the only one capable of saving the Alliance and wants Geary's job for himself. Then, he gets into hot water with Rione because she thinks he’s risking the entire fleet on a crazy mission just to compete with Falco. To top it all off, 39 ships mutinied! I felt so bad for the po...

2.5 Stars Another decent, straightforward read. The 2-D villains (the evil empire and the doubters in the fleet... basically everyone not on team Geary) started to get annoying, as did the simplistic analysis of military doctrine (tactics=good, flying your spaceship into your enemy's death-ray=bad), which was especially disappointing as I had actually enjoyed it in the previous book. On the bright side, Geary's attempts to maintain morale in the fleet were written with surprising deftness and th...

Starship battles; big, gratuitous ship-of-the-line starship battles. If you are a fan of epic space combat, you will probably enjoy The Lost Fleet series. If you are looking for realistic characters and deep character development, not so much.Fearless by Jack Campbell continues the saga of Black Jack Geary and the Alliance fleet trapped in Syndicate space. They manage to make it through a few more systems, but in one, they pick up a strong-willed Captain—the fearless Flaco—from a prison camp. He...

This series really reminds me of the 2005 Battlestar Galactica. While the plot is a bit different, the character archetypes feel very familiar. It's an enjoyable sci-fi novel, though it does take a while for the main characters to evolve beyond two-dimensional cut-outs; you have to get to the very end of Fearless before they start to feel truly human. That said, I’m genuinely enjoying the journey. If for no other reason, Jack Campbell—a graduate of the US Naval Academy—has a solid grasp of what ...

Fearless by Jack Campbell is a solid entry in the series that holds up well. If you caught my review of the first volume, you’ll know I’m a fan of this military science fiction series. This installment definitely "held the line," though there was a point where I considered dropping my rating to 3 stars. The story was in real danger of becoming a bit of a "one-trick pony." Without giving away any spoilers, I’ll just say that a recurring plot device involves Captain Geary’s ongoing friction with ...

I don't expect much from military space fiction. Usually, I'm looking for well-drawn stock characters, a few decent military jokes, a solid fight scene, a clever tactical solution, and maybe even a little reflection on the nature of war. Fearless by Jack Campbell lacked every one of those redeeming qualities. In fact, unless you really enjoy meticulously described space naval battles written in dense military jargon, this book doesn't offer much. To be fair, the battles seem very precise, and I...
